A Message from Administration
Good afternoon GSES Community!
I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weekend weather! We have had a great last couple of weeks at GSES and I want to thank all of you for your support of our school and our students.
A huge shout out to Ms. Gassman and Ms. McKay who worked so hard to make our Book Fair such a phenomenal success! We have the best media center staff! They care about our community, especially our students. Our district has had a strategic focus on literacy and they certainly support our school in that effort. Ms. Gassman and Ms. McKay organized our book fair so that students and parents could benefit from the experience. Thank you again to those two employees!
This past Friday we had our annual Game Changers Fun Run. It was a great success! I want to give many huge shouts to our wonderful PTO members and Ms. Kaycie Rogers for organizing and managing the event. I also want to thank our staff for working to ensure all students were involved and working through all the potential disruptions to make the event a success. As of the publication of the newsletter, our GSES community has raised over $92,000. That is totally amazing!!! Thank you so much for supporting the initiatives at GSES. We look forward to working with you throughout the year.
Please remember the All Pro Dads event this Thursday on October 5th at 6PM. GSES is excited to be partnering with this organization to build relationships with our community, especially the young men in our building and their parents/guardians. Please come out and spend some time with us and former NFL linebacker David Brandon.
Something new we are offering this year is the opportunity to have lunch with your students. Working with our leadership team and taking feedback from some of our community members, we are excited to offer some times for parents to eat lunch with their children in a manner that also allows us to keep safety at the forefront of all we do. As you will see once we release the Sign Up Genius form in next week’s Panther Post, space will be limited as we experiment with the process. We have several red high top tables in the main entrance to the school that we will offer as seating for lunches. Each table can hold four people. Here are the guidelines we have set for the lunches:
In trying to serve as many people who want to take advantage of the opportunity as possible, we are only allowing 1 lunch meeting per family per month. We are going to monitor the list to ensure as many parents throughout the year are able to have the opportunity to sit with their students and enjoy a meal in the atrium.
All attendees will need to bring an ID and check in and out at the front office via our Raptor security system. We will not allow anyone to come in the building without ID and the Raptor scan.
Parents/guests may only eat at the designated red tables in the atrium, not in the cafeteria.
Parents/guests may only eat with their own children at their scheduled lunch time. We cannot pull students to eat lunch during instructional time.
We will post the registration link beginning in next week's newsletter. The first day to have lunch with your student will be Wednesday, October 18, 2023. At this time we are only going to allow lunches on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We may elect to add more days as we move along, but for now we are only offering two days per week.
As always, great things are happening at GSES! Thank you so much for all that you do to make that a possibility.

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS
Mr. Pete wins District Driver of the Year!
Mr. Pete McClellan was named Jackson County School System’s first ever BUS DRIVER OF THE YEAR at a special ceremony last Thursday evening honoring our JCSS teachers and support staff! It is such a well-deserved honor, and we are thankful to see Mr. Pete getting the recognition he deserves for his dedication to our students and community.
Along with Mr. Pete, STEM teacher Mrs. Kasey Sheridan was recognized as one of three finalists for JCSS Teacher of the Year, and Ms. Kaycie Rogers, Instructional Coach, was recognized for being GSES Support Person of the Year.
We had a great time celebrating this team and are thankful that they, along with MANY other wonderful staff members, are part of our GSES family!
All About Apples!
Mrs. Benkoski and Mrs. Holcombe's students have been working hard to develop their literacy skills. They worked on learning how to follow directions and using language skills while working together to make apple pie in a cup. They paired their pies with some apple cider for a yummy treat and also enjoyed many other apple-themed learning opportunities throughout the week.
Meet Gus!
This guy officially has a name! Meet GUS, the Gum Springs Panther! After 960 votes cast last week, the Yellow Claw's entry "Gus" won the Name That Cub contest. Yellow Claw earns 50 tickets for submitting the winning name! You'll see Gus around at lots of our GSES events. Gus even sported some cool new kicks at the Fun Run on Friday, and he had a great time hanging out with his pal Mr. Moneybags!
