Veterans Day Tribute
GSES students will honor our veterans and active military service members in a special program on Friday, November 11th at 9:00 A.M. Veterans and current service members are invited to attend with their GSES students or staff members. Even if your service member cannot attend the event in person, we want to include all veterans and current service members who have a GSES connection in our slide show tribute during the program. Please complete our Google Form at https://tinyurl.com/gsesveterans to share your information about the special connections from your family or to RSVP if a veteran or service member from your family plans to attend our program. The form will close at 11:59 P.M. on Friday, November 4th. Thank you for helping us honor this much-appreciated part of our GSES family!
We have some talented tech-thinkers at GSES and are excited to offer a new competition opportunity for these superstars called the GSES Student Technology Competition. Our students will learn about the competition at school this week, so we wanted to be sure to keep families in the loop as well in case your child is interested in participating. To enter, students complete a project in one of the categories listed below. Each student will present his or her project for a panel of judges and answer questions to show what they have learned and their level of independence in the category. Specific details and scoring rubrics for each project can be found HERE. Students may complete projects and compete as individuals or with a partner in either the 3rd-4th grade division or the 5th-6th grade division. GSES winners will advance to the JCSS district competition, and JCSS winners will advance to the Northeast Georgia regional competition. We are already working on many projects for the competition at school, but students also have the option of working on other projects at home. We are eager to see the creative ideas our students share!

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS
We had lots of fun "CELEBRATING A DRUG FREE LIFE" this week for National Red Ribbon Week. Students enjoyed theme dress-up days, a school "Cupcake Hunt," a poster contest, a visit from our Panther mascot, and, of course, learning about the importance of making healthy choices, as we pledged commitments to healthy living. Thank you to counselors Mrs. Sun and Mrs. Hughes for organizing this important week.
5th graders in Mrs. Tinnell and Mrs. Hawk's classes created a Wax Museum of Innovative Thinkers this week. Students, staff, and special guests enjoyed bringing each wax character exhibit to life to learn about important historical figures from the turn of the century that students have been researching and exploring in social studies this year.
1st graders had a great time exploring fact and fiction during a special BAT DAY on Friday. Students enjoyed activities like researching different types of bats, reading Stellaluna and comparing bats with birds, learning about why bats are an important part of our ecosystem, playing bat-themed math games, making batty snacks, and, of course, flashlight reading in their classroom bat caves!
