News & Updates
Thank you for helping us make this year a great one at GSES! Having such a supportive community is a pillar of our success, and we couldn't do what we do without families like you. We hope you have a great summer making lots of fun memories with your families!
Three GSES staff members are turning in their badges for the final time! Mrs. April Duffey, Mrs. Dianne Lee, and Mr. Larry Lee are retiring this year. We are thankful for their service to the Jackson County School System and will miss having them as part of our GSES family next year. Congratulations!
Congratulations to our May Tribe of the Month, PAWNEE (Purple Tribe)! This is their first win this school year. Since they were just announced at the end of the year, Pawnee will be celebrated during the month of August until we name our first tribe of the month at the end of August next year. Look for the purple flag flying in front of the school in the fall!
Students in 3rd-5th grades took the Georgia Milestones End of Grade Assessments this spring. These results are used to measure student mastery of state-adopted grade level standards and student readiness for the next grade level. Georgia Milestones scores are in the process of being received by our system. Schools will send home printed student score reports when they become available from the Georgia Department of Education in August. We are proud of our students’ hard work and performance this year!
Back-to-School Info
The year may be over, but we are already in full swing making preparations for next year! Here's what you need to know to get ready.
The first day of school for students will be August 3, 2023. You can view next year's approved school calendar HERE.
If you want to get a jump on purchasing school supplies for next year, you can view the 2023-24 supply list HERE.
We are excited to welcome students and families back to GSES to meet your new teachers at Open House on Tuesday, August 1st. Be sure to save the date. (See specific information on the graphic below.)
Save time at Open House by pre-registering for transporation safety signs for car riders and golf cart riders. Be on the lookout for a link that will be shared via social media and Remind two weeks before school starts where you can register.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
We hope you will encourage your child(ren) to participate in our JCSS Summer Reading Challenge. Our students have worked hard this year to grow as readers, and we want keep their foundational reading skills sharp over the summer. You can avoid the "summer slide" and make heading back to school in the fall an easier transition for your child by continuing daily reading routines over the summer. Having a reading routine sets the precedent that reading is ALWAYS important, not just in school (and it can be lots of fun too, of course!). Summer is a great time to try out new books and genres, find new favorite bookstores (like our personal local favorite The Inside Story), and take advantage of the wonderful FREE summer programs offered by our local libraries.
Your child should have received a copy of the Summer Reading Bingo Challenge with his/her end-of-school packet. Keep it on your refrigerator all summer and use it to help track your child's reading this summer. We PROMISE the growth you will see in your child's reading skills and confidence will be a great reward! Help your child view reading as a fun and exciting privilege, not a chore. You can learn more about our JCSS Summer Reading Challenge HERE. We look forward to seeing lots of completed Bingo Boards back at GSES in the fall when we celebrate this summer's responsible readers!

Summer Camp Opportunities
Jackson County High School students and staff are excited to host a variety of summer enrichment opportunities for younger students. These programs are great because they are affordable for families, provide financial support our high school programs, offer leadership opportunities to our older JCSS students, and give your students the unique opportunity to build relationships with JCHS students and staff. Click HERE for details and registration information for summer sports camps.
The JCHS Panther Players are also excited to host Theatre Arts Summer Camp, where campers will learn what is involved in creating a theatrical production and perform on stage at the end of the week for family and friends.
