News & Updates
Just a reminder that there is no school for students on Monday and Tuesday, March 13th and 14th. Enjoy your long weekend!
Calling all FUTURE PANTHERS! Kindergarten Registration opens THIS WEEK, on Tuesday, March 14th. Having an accurate count of rising kindergarteners is very important to help us make staffing and resource decisions for the upcoming school year. Please help us spread the word to friends with rising kindergarteners by sharing this newsletter link or tagging them in the information that will be posted on our social media pages Tuesday.
We're celebrating a quarter full of great student behavior at this Friday's Panther Playoffs! We encourage students to wear their tribe shirts or colors on Friday.
Don't forget to place your orders for custom products featuring your child's original artwork from Original Works at https://store.originalworks.com/gallerylogin/. To order, you will need the school code "Gum" (case sensitive). The other access codes you will need are unique to your child's artwork and can be found on the brochure your child brought home. (If you have misplaced your info, you can contact Mrs. Hannifin at khannifin@jcss.us.) Feel free to share the link and access codes with any friends or family who might like to order a special keepsake too. The ordering window is open now through March 22, and orders will be delivered shortly after Spring Break--just in time to make great gifts for Mother's Day or Father's Day!
Do you hear your students talk about how much they love ASL?! ASL, or Advanced Strategies Lab, is our math-based specials class that gives students a chance to "play" with math. In ASL, students engage in games and activities that help them develop number sense and explore mathematical concepts in a fun way. One of students' favorite activities each year is the Glow Days Extravaganza that Mrs. Landers and Mrs. Severt do an awesome job organizing. If you would like to contribute to this special event, check out their Amazon Wishlist HERE. Thanks for your support!

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS
The GSES Science Olympiad Team is bringing some hardware back to school after Saturday's Northeast Georgia Regional Science Olympiad Competition. The team was recognized with a 4th Place trophy out of the 13 teams competing in the event! Three partnerships also won medals for being Top 3 finishers in their events. Congratulations to Lane Peevy and Sebastian Coca-Capen who won 1st place in Paper Rockets, Sophie Thomas and Coralie Keith who won 2nd place in Backyard Biologist, and Allie Duncan and Silas Black who won 3rd place in Disease Detectives. The team has been training after school for the past six months and was coached by Mrs. Sheridan, Mrs. Tinnell, and Ms. Rogers, along with expert parent coaches Greg Bennett, Heather Hamrick, and Michael Hamrick. We are SO PROUD of this team for their dedication and determination. Join us in congratulating this amazing group!
Five GSES Panthers represented the Northeast Georgia region at the State Student Technology competition on Saturday, after winning at the school, district, and regional level. Daniel D'Arienzo won 2nd place at the State Level in the project area of Productivity Design for his interactive gift guide, and Violet Brooks won 3rd place at the State Level for the website design project that she and partner Ellie Rankin created about the water cycle. Our other state competitors included 5th grader Dylan Gierum in the Robotics project, 4th grader Jacob Mack in Multimedia Applications, and 3rd grader Charleigh Kayumova in Video Production. We are already making plans for even bigger and better projects for next year's competition! To make it to the state level is a huge accomplishment for these students (especially in our school's first year of project participation), and so are SO PROUD of all of them for their hard work!
Mrs. Hawk's 5th grade students have been busy around town, extending their learning beyond the classroom and into our community. For their recent writing unit, students were to use their favoring opinions of local stops and shops to compose a piece that would persuade fellow neighbors, friends, and family members to shop, dine, and enjoy our community businesses within Jackson County.
These amazing writers then visited their selected business to present their writing and bravely read their writing piece to an employee in a leading role! In support of their learning and bravery, many students were awarded gift cards, t-shirts, dessert, and kitchen tours, as well as, featured in corporate newsletters, had their published writing displayed in stores, and much more. This makes wanting to "speak to the manager" something to brag about!
Thank you to each of the local spots for welcoming our learners and recognizing their hard work, and to these BRAVE students for being great community supporters!
Our GSES community is invited to join us for Opening Night at the Jackson County Student Art Show! A public reception and awards ceremony will take place this Thursday, March 16th. We hope you can come out to support our talented artists as we celebrate Youth Art Month in the Jackson County School System. A list of students whose work was selected for the show is featured in the graphics above. Be sure to scroll to see all grades. EVERYONE is encouraged to join us to see their great work and support our talented JCSS student artists.
Remember a few weeks ago when we bragged on our 4th grade students who completed projects for Jackson County 4-H's School Project Achievement competition with their research and public speaking projects? We are excited to announce that 54 of our students have been invited to advance to the district level competition! On Saturday, March 25th, they compete in the Northeast Georgia District Project Achievement Competition. Way to go, 4th grade! (If you are a parent of one of these students, please don't forget to RSVP to the 4-H office by the deadline on Monday, March 13th.)
Ms. Simmons and her EL students had a great field trip experience this week! They enjoyed touring the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Georgia Aquarium, and World of Coke.
Congratulations to our winning classes from February's Kids Heart Challenge. Mrs. Cash and Mrs. Rechin's kindergarten classes enjoyed a book study comparing different versions of "The Three Little Pigs." They also enjoyed activities like rewriting the story from the wolf's perspective, sequencing story events, and building noodle houses that represented 10s and 1s for math. Students rounded out their unit on Friday with a special pig snack and pig-themed STEM project, where they had to buy supplies with a budget and build houses that could withstand the BIG BAD BLOWDRYER! The real highlight of their unit was having some special "visitors" who came to GSES straight from the farm!
Mrs. Holman and Mrs. Kollman’s kindergarten super scientists have been learning all about soil this week. In a fun lab activity this week, students got to explore many different types of soil. Using their hands and eyes, they felt and talked about the color, texture, smell, and all the things they found in each type of soil--including rocks, twigs, leaves and even worms!
