News & Updates
Welcome back, Panthers! We hope you had a fun and relaxing Fall Break and are ready for our busy and exciting week ahead. Students may wear pajamas as we head back to school Monday, October 17th for our Panther Pajama Party! (Students earned this for reaching one of our school-wide Fun Run rewards.)
Tuesday, October 18th is the 50th day of school, and interested students are invited to dress up in 1950s attire for the celebration. Our specials teachers have lots of activities planned for all grade levels to join the fun!
JCHS' spirit theme for this Friday's home game is a Pink-Out in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Since we have Tribe Day at GSES on Friday, we're celebrating a little early! GSES students are encouraged to wear PINK on THURSDAY for GSES PINK PANTHER Spirit Day. Our Secret Spirit Squad will choose four lucky PINK PANTHERS to win tickets to Friday night's JCHS game!
Fall picture retakes are Thursday, October 20th. Any students who have enrolled at GSES since September 20th or who were absent on September 20th will need to have their pictures taken for the yearbook. Other students requesting a retake MUST return the original proof or bring a note from a parent requesting a retake in order to be photographed.
This Friday will be our Quarter 1 Panther Playoffs and tribe celebrations. We are excited to celebrate all the positive behavior points our students have earned during the first quarter of school. All students are encouraged to wear their tribe shirts or colors on Friday.
Plan ahead! Wednesday, October 26th is an Early Release Day to allow our staff time to schedule parent conferences. JCSS elementary schools will release at 11:30 A.M., and there will be no clubs or After-School Program that day. All students will need to be car or bus riders, so please make special arrangements for that day. Be sure you communicate any transportation changes to your child's teacher.
Thursday, October 6th was National Coach's Day, and we are lucky to have two of the BEST at GSES! Coach Whitlock and Coach Backer are hard workers and go-getters who challenge our students to help them achieve at higher levels. They both support our staff and school in many ways that go beyond their job descriptions, and they make sure our students are having fun while learning and growing. We are SO THANKFUL to have such awesome coaches at GSES!
October 17-21 is National School Bus Safety Week. We have a WONDERFUL team of drivers at GSES who make sure our students arrive at school and home safely each day. We are looking forward to celebrating our drivers throughout this week! As part of our celebration, our students artists are invited to participate in this year's bus safety poster contest. Posters must depict this year's theme "Safely Rolling to My Destination" and follow all contest rules. If your child's is interested in participating, click HERE for contest guidelines. All entries are due to GSES by Friday, October 21st.

Bon Voyage! Our teachers love planning authentic learning opportunities to help bring history alive for students! Just before Fall Break, 5th grade students participated in the annual GSES Immigration Simulation to help them better understand the experience of European immigrants during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Prior to the simulation, each student took on the role of a character; researched their character's background, language, and geography; and created a passport.
During the simulation, classes set sail to Ellis Island as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class passengers. Upon arrival, they experienced passport examinations at Customs, baggage inspections, medical inspections, currency exchange, and the purchase of train tickets to their final destinations. Once they reached their final destinations, students explored jobs that were common among new immigrants, such as construction, factory work, working in shops or restaurants, and mining. We loved seeing our students step up to help one another during challenging situations as they experienced the many hardships and joys that immigrants faced as they began a new life in America. Thank you to our 5th grade teachers and support staff who put a lot of work into planning this opportunity to help our students learn and reflect about important historical events.
