News & Updates
Happy Mother’s Day to the many wonderful ones in our GSES family! Thank you for the way you give so selflessly, not just to your own children, but to lots of other people’s kids too. Our school community is what it is because of your love and support.
Congratulations to our April Tribe of the Month: Bella Coola (Blue Tribe)! Bella Coola students and staff members are excited to see their blue flag proudly flying in front of the school once again!
We are excited to recognize our students' many accomplishments at this year's Award's Day celebrations. Guests are welcome to join us. Visitors may enter through the downstairs gym doors or at the main front entrance of the building (NOT THE OFFICE). Both entrances will have staff members there to monitor for safety.
Parents are welcome to come cheer for your child at this year’s Field Day festivities from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. (See dates on calendar.) GSES Field Days will take place on the WJMS football field. Due to the number of classes who will be participating in Field Day at the same time, we ask that all spectators remain on the track or in the bleachers. NO VISITORS WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE FIELD. (We ask this for the safety of our students.) Please know that parking is extremely limited at GSES on school days, and no parking is allowed along the cut-through road between GSES and WJMS. Students must remain with their teacher during the event. If you would like to check out your child after Field Day, teachers will have sign-out sheets available at Field Day dismissal. Our staff has worked hard to plan an awesome Field Day for our students, and we appreciate your cooperation to ensure it is a safe and FUN day!
The Book Fair will be open during school hours May 15-19. Students may bring money to shop during the school day, or families who are visiting for Field Day or Awards Day may bring your child with you to shop together. This is a great chance to stock up on some fun books for summer reading!
Our last few days of school are very busy with Field Days, Awards, Days, and the Book Fair all taking place. We appreciate your patience and cooperation to help keep our students safe during this busy week. Please note the following safety procedures:
Families may shop together at the Book Fair, but every student who vists must first be signed out with their teacher, even if they will be staying for the whole day at school. If your child is staying at school, he/she can be signed back in with their teacher in the classroom (NOT THE OFFICE).
On Field Days, if you would like to check your child out of school early and/or shop at the Book Fair, he/she must be signed out with the teacher at the field. Your child will then be under parent supervision. Please enter the Book Fair from the outside doors to the media center if you are visiting after Field Day.
After Awards Day programs, if you would like to take your child home or shop at the fair, he/she MUST be checked out in the classroom, with the teacher. If your child will be staying at school after shopping, he/she will need to be checked back in with the teacher, in the classroom (NOT THE OFFICE).
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in the effort to keep our students and staff safe, while enjoying all of our exciting end of the year events.
All student medications must be picked up from the clinic by 3:00 P.M. on May 23rd. All medication left in the clinic will be destroyed on May 24th. Parents may choose to pick up medication earlier than this time but would need to leave enough for the remainder of the current school year.

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS
Staff Shout-Outs
Last week we celebrated School Clinic Appreciation Day. We are so thankful for Mrs. Gierum and the great care she provides our students!
May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, and we are proud to recognize our school Speech Pathologists this week. They work hard to help our students develop essential communication skills and find their voices! Thank you Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Lackey, and Mrs. Byrd.
Stars of the Stage
Congratulations our wonderful Drama Club and Chorus who saw their hard work come to life with their performances of Disney's Aladdin Kids this week. Our students had a busy week with three live performances, and each one of them was spectacular! Our talented students have been hard at work for months memorizing lines, practicing songs, learning choreography, and building an incredible set to bring the show to life. Thank you to Mrs. Jackie Cooper, Director, and a large team of staff members for inspiring our students to make the magic happen! If you didn't get a chance to see the show in person, be sure to check out our school Facebook page later in the week for a link to watch the show (and view more pictures).
Science Olympiad Success
Our GSES Science Olympiad Team recently made Jackson County School System history by being the first ever elementary Science Olympiad team from our district to be invited to the STATE competition! Team members travelled to Kennesaw State University last Saturday, where they competed against 62 teams in 18 science and engineering-based events. They represented our school well and were very excited to have one team recognized for a Top Ten finish! Congratulations to 3rd grader Parker Hamrick and 4th grader Will Roland who won 7th place IN THE STATE in the event "Rock Hound!" We are proud of of them and all of our Science Olympiad team members. They have been practicing every week for the past seven months and spent lots of their own time studying and practicing. This dedicated group made us Panther Proud! Congratulations!
Field Trip Fun
We love when our learning opportunities extend beyond the classroom walls! Kindergarten recently enjoyed a fun-filled field trip to Washington Farms to learn about plant life cycles and the importance of Georgia agriculture, and 1st grade had a great time learning about animal habitats and adaptations at Chestatee Wildlife Preserve.
