News & Updates
Thanks for helping us find our Panther supporters all across the U.S. as we kick off our "Read Across America" celebration this week, February 27-March 3. Each day this week, we will explore a region of the United States and stories that help us learn more about that region's geography and culture. We'd love your help as we promote a love of reading during this special week of celebration. If you have a connection with a GSES supporter from another state, please share our quick survey link with them so they can share their favorite book and Panther connection with us. We are hoping to fill our interactive USA map with connections from ALL 50 STATES! We are also looking forward to spotlighting some of our out-of-state Panther supporters on our GSPN (Gum Springs Panther Network) Morning News Show. Thanks for your help! As of 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, we've already found supporters in 27 states (not to mention Washington, DC, Thailand, Australia, and British Columbia!). How cool is that?! Can you help us finish filling our map by the end of the week? The green states on the image below show the states we've already reached (but you can still add more supporters from those states too). Share today at bit.ly/gsesreads!
Friday, March 3rd will be Book Character Dress-Up Day, as we wrap up our "Read Across America" Week celebration. Get your costumes ready! We can't wait to see our favorite book characters come to life in the GSES Book Character Virtual Parade. (We'll share a link on social media and in next week's Panther Post for you all to see our celebration too.)
Check your child's backpack for information that was sent home Friday about the Original Works Art Sale. Each student received a customized brochure featuring his/her name and personal artwork on the front cover. It also includes a code that allows you to place orders for unique gifts to wear or share featuring your child's original artwork! The ordering window is open now through March 22, and orders will be delivered shortly after Spring Break--just in time to make great gifts for Mother's Day or Father's Day! Thank you to our art teacher Mrs. Hannifin for her hard work making this happen. A percentage of sales from your orders also allows her to purchase supplies like clays and glazes to help your child have unique and memorable art experiences. If you have questions about products or ordering, you can contact Mrs. Hannifin at khannifin@jcss.us. We are proud of our students' dedication and hard work to make products in which they feel great pride! We hope you are as excited as we are to show off their great art!

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS
We are excited to announce this year's GSES winners of the Young Georgia Authors Writing Contest. These students' masterpieces were chosen by a committee of judges as the top entries for their grade levels of 200+ students! Their work has now advanced to the next competition level and will be judged against writing pieces from each of the elementary schools in Jackson County. Join us in giving a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to these awesome writers!
Students in 3rd-5th grades have been enjoying new lessons in writing to help them write text-based opinion essays. Mrs. Wilkins' and Mrs. Kinnett's 3rd graders are seeing great progress as students learn new strategies and gain the confidence needed to take writing risks. We are proud to see our students showing great teamwork, working hard, and growing!
2nd grader Isaac Mitas was this year's top Fundraiser in the Kid's Heart Challenge. Isaac and his family raised over $1,500 for the American Heart Association. Great job, Isaac!
Many of our upper grades' classes and younger grades' classes pair up for monthly sessions as Book Buddies! We love seeing the confidence grow in both groups as our older readers help younger students grow their reading skills. Check out these Book Buddies from Mrs. Ellis' 4th grade with Mrs. Cash's kindergarten and Ms. Bellew's 4th grade with Mrs. Salom's 1st grade.
