As of September 4, 2022, Typhoon Henry has left the Filipino area of responsibility, as well as 2,400 Filipinos affected in its wake.
As Typhoon Henry, formerly a super-typhoon, moves north, the Philippines has begun recovering in its wake. Over 2,400 within Luzon have been affected by the Typhoonn’s effects, which can include displacement, property damage, and in certain cases, injury. Within the Cordillera Administrative Region, (CAR) over 12 structuresinfrastructures have been damaged, with an estimated cost of over ₱61,300,000. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has tallied 2,442 individuals that have been affected by the disaster over the span of the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley and the CAR.
Other countries have also experienced effects and damages from Typhoon Henry has since been moving northeast. It has now made landfall within Busan, where over 15,000 citizens have been ordered to evacuate. Other east Asian countries, such as Japan and Taiwan have both reported increased rainfall. Effects from Henry are still slated to affect the Philippines and cause rain showers in areas such as Metro Manila, Bataan, and Batanes.
The Philippines, which is one of the countries situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is incredibly prone to typhoons and earthquakes. Historic typhoons have included the 1881 typhoon Haiphong, with an estimated 20,000 total deaths, as well as Typhoon Haiyan (otherwise known as Typhoon Yolanda) in 2013, which caused devastating losses within Visayas. Yolanda, which is one of the most prolific natural disasters of the last century, affected an estimated 11 million people, with upwards of 6,000 confirmed dead and around a thousand missing. Yolanda cost around 2.98 billion in damages (2013 USD) and remains the most expensive Filipino natural disaster, as well as one of the most devastating recent natural disasters to happen worldwide.
Filipinos are getting ready to celebrate the Christmas ‘Ber months of the year starting this month, September.
The ‘Ber months are known as the months leading up to Christmas that end in ‘Ber such as September and December. The Christmas season is very special to the Philippines which means a lot to the 80% of Filipinos who are Roman Catholic.
Filipinos celebrate the start of the ‘Ber months by playing Christmas music in stores, caroling and displaying colorful lights. Stores and malls have already been decorated and are selling Christmas decorations. Public areas like parks, buildings, and streets have also put up festivities for the “holly jolly” season.
Family is also a huge part of the Christmas season in the Philippines. Many families abroad come back home during these months.
As the ‘Ber months and Christmas are very special to the Philippines, we asked some ISM students what the ‘Ber months meant to them.
“During the ber months I'm able to focus on my faith, friends, family and more," replied Mariana (Maica) Gloria, 8th grade.
Bexie Morrison said, “It makes the Christmas month, December, more exciting.”
Emma Domingo, an 8th grade student answered that she thought it was a “time where families can get together for Christmas and Halloween.”
The Philippines is also known to have the longest and earliest Christmas celebration in the world. The 4-month season is packed with lots of festivals and celebrations. During the later months many families travel to places like Boracay, Tagaytay and Bohol, visit popular light festivals, and participate in holiday parties.
However, the pandemic has caused many of these activities to pause such as traveling and big groups events.
Regardless, the pandemic will not seem to stop the festive cheer in the Philippines and the following months may hold many more celebrations to come.
Last week, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. stated he will increase the Filipino nurses sent overseas as the government fixes issues faced by the job in the country. He is also adding that the government will improve opportunities for nurses across the Philippines.
"As we work hard to improve the state of our health care system at home, let us join hands to maintain our country's position as the gold standard when it comes to providing health care workers to hospitals and health facilities globally," Marcos announced.
Currently, the administration set a 7,500 limit for the healthcare workers overseas being deployed. However, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said the number has yet to be reached. Only about 2,000 healthcare workers sent abroad from January to May in 2022.
The POEA also said that Saudi Arabia, Japan, Britain, and Germany have been the top destinations for overseas nurses for quite a while. Although, strong demand for places such as Singapore and Hong Kong have come forward during the pandemic.
To improve the situation of undeployed nurses, Marcos vowed to work with the Congress for passage of the Philippine Nursing Practice Act, which reforms through better career opportunities and education for Filipino nurses. The measure has already been approved on the final reading at the House of Representatives.
The government had already given around 26B pesos worth of assistance to the nurses as of August. This includes life insurance, transportation, death compensation, meals, accommodation, COVID-19 sickness, and some other risk allowances.
"As part of our goal to raise the profile and improve the working condition of nurses, we seek to address the disparity in salaries between nurses in government hospitals with those in the private sector," Marcos said. He has also spoken that even though he thinks it’s not enough for the nurses, they’re a little short on funds.
On September 5, 2022 at a rally in Wisconsin, U.S. President Joe Biden took aim at the followers of former President Donald Trump, labeling them as “MAGA Republicans and describing their philosophy as “semi-facism.”
Biden delivered these remarks at a laborfest event at Henry Maier Festival Park in Milwaukee. His speech kicked off the most significant leg of the midterm races as Republicans and Democrats compete for control of Congress and key statehouses across the country, including Wisconsin’s.
Biden used this event to criticize Trump supporters and the extreme right. He portrayed Republicans aligning themselves with the ex-President as a threat to democracy and the rights of all. He warned that some Republicans now believe so firmly in Trumpism that they are willing to disregard and undermine core American values.
“MAGA Republicans in Congress have chosen to go backwards, full of anger, violence, hate and division. Together we can and must choose a different path forward,” said President Biden.
The President also challenged Republican lawmakers who voted against policies that he and other Democratic legislators laid out including the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act. He noted that while some of them secretly supported these beneficial policies “they just couldn’t let Biden have a victory.”
During his speech, Biden singled out Senator Ron Johnson who is running for reelection in November for saying that the January 6th Insurrection of the United States capitol was a “peaceful protest.” He then proceeded to criticize lawmakers who downplayed the January 6 attack and even went as far as defending the rioters.
However, Biden made clear that “not all Republicans are MAGA Republicans who embrace the extreme ideology.” He claimed that he has been able to work with mainstream Republicans throughout his political career. “We have to be stronger and more determined and more committed to saving American democracy, than the MAGA Republicans and that guy who are destroying democracy because democracy is at stake,” Biden said on Monday.
During the event, the President also voiced support for labor unions. “I wouldn’t be here without unions! Unions. Electricians, iron workers, teamsters, laborers, bricklayers, transit workers, plumbers and pipefitters, steelworkers. The middle class built America, everyone knows that, but the unions built the middle class,” the President said.
Biden also recognized labor union workers for his past political victories, from his very first senate race to the latest presidential election in 2020, singling out the “Union labor [who] endorsed me and fought for me.”
In addition to criticizing MAGA Republicans, Biden tried to use this celebration as a way to draw union support for Democratic candidates competing in the general election this fall.
Since mid-June 2022, Pakistan has been hit with terrible floods due to 10 times the average rainfall and huge amounts of melting glaciers. This is a consequence of a severe heat wave that scientists believe was caused by climate change.
The monsoon season this year in Pakistan has been one of the most intense the country has ever seen, with one site in Sindh reporting 1,288 millimeters of rain so far in August, compared with the monthly average of 46mm.
So far, the floods have caused a third of the country to go underwater (about the size of Wyoming), with over 1,000 deaths, almost half a million people displaced, and at least 10 billion dollars in property damages.
"Millions are homeless, schools and health facilities have been destroyed, livelihoods are shattered, critical infrastructure wiped out, and people's hopes and dreams have washed away," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday.
In total, it is estimated that the floods have affected about 33 million people.
The areas near the Kabul river and the Indus river like Sindh, Balochistan, Kyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Pakistani-Administered Kashmir have been the most affected, with thousands of houses damaged.
The floods have also swept away over 700,000 livestock, and two million acres of crops, and damaged thousands of kilometers of bridges and roads, hampering access to rescue vehicles. Yet even with the help of helicopters, authorities are still struggling to reach those trapped.
The United Nations and Pakistan issued an appeal on Tuesday for more than $160 million US in emergency funding to help the millions of people affected by the “monsoon on steroids”. Pakistan produces less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions but is one of the top 10 most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change due to its geographical location and high dependence on agriculture and water resources.
All the money donated will supply 5.2 million people with food, water, sanitation, emergency education, protection, and health support.
However, The Pakistani government estimates it will need $7-14bn per year, every year until 2050, for adaptation and to build climate-resilient infrastructure, and many wonder if the richer world will agree to not only help out in the immediate aftermath but also pay to prevent a repetition.
Monkeypox virus is an illness that can look like a rash, it can appear around your whole body. This infection usually lasts around 2-4 weeks depending on the case. The outbreak started in May 2022 and is still currently spreading throughout the world.
Monkeypox can be spread in multiple ways. Similar to the COVID-19 pandemic, Monkeypox can be spread by close contact with someone who has the illness. Touching the same objects, direct skin to skin contact and through the blood/respiratory secretions. In most cases, the virus is spread through respiratory droplets, similar to COVID 19.
Monkeypox originated in Africa and soon made its way across the other continents. The major outbreak came in May 2022, however it’s still going on right now. In Nigeria, monkeypox is considered endemic. Meaning, the virus is regularly found among certain people or in a secluded area.
The first monkeypox patient in the 2022 outbreak had traveled the UK from Nigeria. However, cases are now spreading through people who have not come from West or Central Africa. This means Monkeypox is being formed within local cities/states.
Monkeypox isn't as much of a major concern as COVID-19. While monkeypox only has a 3-6% mortality rate and the majority of people have quick recoveries.
On June 24, 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned in the U.S. In some states, banning abortion is still undecided or bans are set to take place.
What is Roe v. Wade?
In the court case Roe v. Wade, January 22, 1973, Jane Roe (fake name to protect their identity,) filed a lawsuit against Henry Wade, an American lawyer. Roe challenged the Texas abortion laws and claimed that the state laws affected her privacy rights, protected by the first, fourth, fifth, ninth, and fourteenth amendments. The decision was liberalized, and abortion was legal in the United States (Roe v. Wade, Oyez).
Roe v. Wade Overturned, Abortion Status
On June 24, the Supreme Court made a decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, and abortion has been banned in almost a third of the United States. Abortion has been banned in Kentucky, Alabama, South Dakota, and Missouri with no exceptions of rape or incest. In Alabama, as of June 24, 2022, a law has been lifted that allows abortion if the mother has a dangerous health risk, or the fetus has a lethal anomaly. Other states have similar laws, if it affects the mother’s health, then abortion is allowed.
Executive Order and Protests
At the White House on July 8, 2022, Joe Biden says, "I'm asking the Justice Department that, much like they did in the Civil Rights era, to do everything in their power to protect these women seeking to invoke their rights.” On that Friday, Biden signed an executive order, and many protesters sat outside the White House, and The Women’s March said they wanted the White House to do more to support women’s reproductive rights.
What’s Happening in the States Now?
In Judge Elizabeth Gleicher’s case, abortion is banned unless the mother’s life is threatened.
Abortion rights are still being argued in courtrooms, and on June 7, Judge Elizabeth Gleicher says the abortion law, dormant before Roe v. Wade was overturned, violates the Michigan constitution. Gleicher says, a law that denies women of controlling their bodies and rejecting safe medical care, also denies women of their dignity.
Michigan’s supreme court considers the decision if they’re going to place a proposed amendment on the ballot of November 8th, which may include abortion rights to the constitution.
700,000 signatures from supporters clears the margin, but it’s been kept of the ballot so far, due to a tie vote by the Board of State Canvassers.
Mikhail Gorbachev reportedly died Tuesday at the age of 91 after a long illness.
Gorbachev was the former leader of the Soviet Union starting from 1985 until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Gorbachev helped forge weapon reduction deals with Western nations and remove the Berlin wall.
Gorbachev had made a series of changes but Soviets tried to overtake him and resulted in the collapse of the Soviet Union, which also resulted in the freedom of Eastern states being free from Soviet control.
“The country was loaded to the brim with weapons. And it would have immediately pushed the country into a civil war,” Gorbachev said.
Russians blamed Gorbachev for the collapse of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev’s former allies deserted him and made him a victim for his troubles.
“Mikhail Gorbchev is as much respected in the West as he is detested in Russia.”. Former DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) officer Rebekah Koffler said. "To Westerners, he brought openness and rebuilding and for the Russians, he destroyed the USSR." she said.
Russian citizens blamed Gorbachev for the downfall of the Soviet Union, which once was a feared nation, whose territory later broke up into 15 separate countries.
Western countries remember him as a pivotal figure that ceased the Cold War.
“Mikhail Gorbchev passed away tonight after a serious and protracted disease,” said Moscow Central Clinical Hospital on August 30th, 2022.
"Gorbachev demonstrated the importance of engagement and diplomacy, shown by the role he played in bringing an end to the Cold War. There is no question he holds an important place in the world's history," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand said.
Gorbachev was a leader more respected in other countries than at home. In Russia, he was hated for dissolving the Soviet Union and by others for moving too slowly in freeing his nation from the grip of Communism. In the West, he remains the Nobel Peace Prize winner who ended the Cold War.
The mass stabbing suspect, Myles Sanderson, was arrested on September 7th, and taken into custody during the afternoon at 3:30 PM. He was pronounced dead shortly after. He injured and took the lives of many people on and near James Smith Cree Nation, located in Canada.
Damien Sanderson, Myles’s Sanderson’s brother, is also suspected for the death of 10 victims and the injuries of 18 other victims of the stabbing spree, but was pronounced dead a day after the attacks. His injuries and wounds were said to not be self-inflicted by the police.
"Let me be honest in saying this, we don't really know what happened. We just know that our family members were killed in their own home, in their yard," said Arcand.
Mark Arcand, the Saskatoon Tribal Chief, had a sister, Bonnie Burns, who is a victim of the mass stabbings in Canada. She died from her injuries. Her son, Gregory Burns, was stabbed but survived.
All but one of the stabbing victims that died were on James Smith Cree Nation, and all were adults, ranging from early 20s to late 70s.
Eighteen were also injured, and it has been said by the agencies that almost all were adults. "We can confirm one young teen was injured and the remaining injured are all adults. We will not be confirming other specific ages," said the agencies.
Sanderson had many warrants for different crimes, and had a lengthy crime history.
In the aftermath, relatives who knew the victims of the mass stabbing are greatly saddened by what happened.
"We don't know the whole story, but I want to apologize to everybody that was hurt and affected by this terrible situation," Sanderson’s mother said in an interview with CBC news.

HIP 65426 b is the first recorded exoplanet to be captured using the James Webb telescope. The planet is estimated to be around 15-20 billion years old and is 385 light-years away from Earth. According to Sasha Hinkley, a professor at the University of Exeter, "This is a transformative moment, not only for Webb but also for astronomy generally.” These observations were led from an international collaboration.
During 2017, the exoplanet was first discovered by Aarynn Carter and his colleagues using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile. While this telescope was able to capture images, the Webb telescope was able to capture more details with its ability to see longer infrared wavelengths, which also developed contrast between the exoplanet and its star, due to HIP 65426 b’s immense brightness compared to its host star. "At first all I could see was light from the star, but with careful image processing I was able to remove that light and uncover the planet,” said Carter, “You’re in the regime where planets are brightest and stars are dimmest.”
The astronomers took Webb’s infrared wavelengths to understand the radiation of energy by the planet’s atmosphere, which allowed them to use models of stellar evolution to pin down its radius to 1.45 times, like the planet Jupiter. Since the exoplanet is 14 million years old, it is dubbed “baby Jupiter” by Biller. “like Jupiter, but right after it formed.” Other astronomers are planning to use the Webb Telescope for many exoplanets, as they know over 5,000 have been discovered, but only have photos of around 20. A great example could be VHS 1256 b, which will also be analyzed by Carters’ team.
"I think what's most exciting is that we've only just begun," Carter said. "There are many more images of exoplanets to come that will shape our overall understanding of their physics, chemistry, and formation. We may even discover previously unknown planets, too."

Since December 25th 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope, nicknamed the Webb Telescope, has been working on capturing images from space that we have not been able to see before.
The telescope was built for space exploration and to look deeper into space and find the first galaxies that were formed in the early universe.
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has set a goal for the Webb Telescope to extend further discoveries of the Hubble Telescope as well as capture star and planet formation in the universe.
On August 30th, 2022 they discovered a perfectly circular ‘Einstein ring’ named after the eccentric scientist, Albert Einstein. The ‘Einstein Ring” phenomenon was originally founded in 1988 and became the greatest scientific mystery of their time.
“Einstein rings are rings of light created when light from a galaxy, star or other light-emitting cosmic objects passes near a massive object before it reaches the earth,.” - The Indian Express
Currently, they have discovered 8 of these rings, and are still on their way to discover more with their highly advanced Webb Telescope.

Last week, on Wednesday, August 24, the dugong was declared functionally extinct in China. Meaning some dugongs are still alive, but their population will most likely never recover. The dugong numbers started rapidly decreasing in 1975, but last week was when officials announced them to be gone in Chinese waters.
There are now estimated to be 200-250 left in the world.
Why are they going extinct?
Dugongs are harmless marine mammals who feed mainly on seagrass. They’re going extinct due to seagrass habitat loss, which is caused by water pollution. Water pollution is caused by garbage in the ocean, and coastal development.
Dugongs are also threatened by bycatch and fishing. They can accidentally get tangled in fishing nets while swimming, and fishermen may discard them if they don’t want the dugong or they can’t legally keep it.
Why are dugongs important?
Dugongs have an important role, they maintain coastal ecosystems. Their feeding on seagrass promotes its growth, which helps feed many other marine species such as dolphins and turtles.
“Their absence will not only have a knock-on effect on ecosystem function, but also serves as a wake-up call – a sobering reminder that extinctions can occur before effective conservation actions are developed.” says Samuel Turvey, from the society’s Institute of Zoology.
Can we help dugongs?
Although there is a low chance of survival for the dugong species, we should still do everything we can to help.
Protect their habitat
Dugongs depend on seagrass, so when visiting the ocean, avoid dragging boats over seagrass patches. Help stop damaging pollutants from entering the ocean by picking up trash on the beach.
Report
Report any injured and dead dugongs you see, in case there's a chance at saving them or researching.
Being sustainable around the ocean
Don’t throw trash into the ocean, and don’t litter the beach.
But even if we took every precaution, a functionally extinct animal like the dugong will most likely never return.
NAB Australian Football League Womens (AFLW) Season 7, officially started on August 25. In 2022, for the first time ever, the AFLW season will consist of all 18 teams.
The weekend of August 25th saw all 18 teams play their first game of Season 7. With the Captains Launch taking place on August 18, the AFLW are hoping that lots of fans show up throughout the season. All AFLW games will be played across different states in Australia, with many big stadiums such as Marvel Stadium, the MCG, Metricon Stadium and the Adelaide Oval included.
With some AFLW players still not playing full time and there still being a major pay gap, many games are still being played at regional ovals. "It's not as easy as just saying 'let's play on the big stadiums,'" AFLW CEO Nicole Livingstone said. "In most cases they cost four times as much to even open the doors and go in.”
However, Women’s footy has come a long way from when many people believed that women shouldn’t play footy because of their gender to now there being an elite level competition with all 18 teams. “When I was 12, I was told I couldn’t play footy because I was a girl,” West Coast Eagles Captain Emma Swanson said.
After a slow start with only 8 teams, the AFLW now, the AFLW now has a sense of completeness in that all 18 teams will be playing for the first time ever. This season the AFLW welcomes 4 new expansion sides including; the Essondon Bombers, the Sydney Swans, the Hawthorn Hawks, and the Port Adelaide Power. “It was a dream come true,” AFLW player Erin Phillips said on moving to Port Adelaide as part of the AFLW expansion.
"It's been a dream come true to play for Essendon. I just look down at this jumper and I feel very privileged," said Maddy Prespakis after moving to Essendon.
A few rules different from the men’s game include, that each quarter will go on for 15 minutes as opposed to the mens 20 minutes. Also, a size 4 footy ball will be used instead of the size 5 at the mens. The “lasso” rule will also take place which means between the arcs, if a player was clearly the last to touch the ball, it will be a free kick to the opposing team.
In 2015, around 318,000 women were playing Aussie Rules, and now, there are more than 600,000 girls and women playing all around Australia. This number will only grow and grow, as the AFLW continues to evolve.
On Sept 1, 2022, Donovan Mitchell, formally from the Utah Jazz, got traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Playing for the Utah Jazz since he was 20, Donovan Mitchell got into the NBA in his sophomore year of college and has been playing for them since 2017. Prior to playing on the Utah Jazz team, he was on his college team, the Louisville Cardinals for 2 years.
Yesterday, he was abruptly traded to the Cavaliers for Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji, and Lauri Markkanen as well as unprotected first round picks for 2025, 2027, 2029 and pick swaps for 2026 and 2028.
“The acquisition of Donovan Mitchell presented us with an incredible opportunity to bring one of the NBA’s most dynamic young All-Stars to Cleveland,” said the president of basketball operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Koby Altman.
Many teams, such as the New York Knicks believed that their offer for Donovan Mitchell was in fact "better", as stated by the Cavaliers Nation, and many die-hard Knicks fans. "The Knicks, according to sources, feel like their proposals with RJ Barrett as the centerpiece with multiple first-round picks were better than the Cavs’ final offer, which is up to interpretation,” said Stefan Bondy from the NY Daily News. To back track, the New York Knicks offered Obi Toppin, Mitchell Robinson, and again 3 unprotected first-round picks. It has also been said that the Knicks and the Jazz were discussing a likely trade after the 2022 season, however, they declined the offer.
With that information being stated, it's likely that the starting line-up is looking stronger for the Cavaliers, as it probably will consist of Donovan Mitchell, Jarrett Allen, Isaac Okoro, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley.
