President Duterte Announces Metro Manila Enhanced Community Quarantine
JoaquinAs of March 15, 2020, Philippines’ President, Rodrigo Duterte officially announced a Metro Manila lockdown. Metro Manila was placed under “community quarantine,” which involves a ban on land, domestic air, and domestic sea travels in and out of the region. Under the lockdown rules, everything is closed including malls and restaurants except for supermarkets, water suppliers and pharmacies. Citizens are required to stay at home unless necessities are limited. The lockdown is set to end on April 14, however, it could be extended or have an earlier termination date.
Due to the recent implication of the law, trespassers will be either charged or arrested for violating the quarantine.
The number of confirmed cases of COVID 19 in the Philippines rose from 6 to 111 in less than a week. Because of this, President Duterte has also placed an international travel ban on countries with local COVID-19 transmission, starting March 20. However, Filipinos and current permanent residents will be allowed to enter the Philippines.

Let’s face it: life in self-isolation can be pretty boring. Even after catching up on sleep and schoolwork, sometimes it feels like you just have too much time on your hands. Here are some shows to combat that boredom, which you can choose from depending on your mood.
If you need a laugh…
Modern Family (Netflix) 13+
With 10 seasons, Modern Family is perfect to binge on days where there’s just nothing to do. The episodes are pretty short (~20 minutes each), and they’re lighthearted, funny, and easy to watch. It follows three different but related families, who face their day to day lives and problems in uniquely amusing and hilarious ways.
The Circle (Netflix) 14+
Although the show starts out kind of annoying, with its slightly brash and over-the-top contestants, the more you watch, the more it grows on you. Within the show, there are eight contestants, all isolated in their own rooms but interacting on a social media platform called “the Circle.” The surprises and relationships that they build are funny and lighthearted, and the show overall is just fun to watch.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Netflix) 14+
I’ve never watched this show, but here is a summary of the show from a friend who watches (and loves!) the show:
“Brooklyn Nine Nine is a show following the workplace antics of Jake Peralta and his colleagues in the Ninety Ninth Precinct in New York, as they solve crimes and embark on crazy adventures. Each episode is about 20 minutes long, and there are six seasons on Netflix!”
When you’re feeling anxious…
Bob Ross (Netflix or Youtube) 8+
There are two Bob Ross series on Netflix, and full episodes are available on Youtube as well. Everyone knows who he is-I don’t think that there’s any need for me to describe the show. The episodes are easy to watch, and relaxing no matter the time or occasion.
Kimi ASMR (Youtube) PG
This channel posts ASMR, but not the kind that we usually see; rather than huge trays of food and slightly obnoxious slurping sounds, this channel posts videos of cooking, with no sounds or music. They also post videos of the countryside where they live, and the scenery along with the peaceful sounds makes for a relaxing video to watch.
Ted-Ed (Youtube) 8+
TED makes more than just talks- on their second channel, they make videos on history, folklore, and technology, among others. The pairing of the videos’ impressive videos along with the calming voices of their narrators makes for videos that are both educational and enjoyable.
If you’re sad…
All The Bright Places (Netflix) 14+
Based on a book, All The Bright Places follows the story of two struggling teens, and the small comforts they find in one another. The movie isn’t overly dramatic or teenager-y, but rather is meaningful and uplifting, albeit heartbreaking. If you need a good cry, this is the one for you.
La La Land (Netflix) 13+
Unlike most Hollywood movies, La La Land doesn’t portray a perfect life- it shows a realistic take on life, with all of its ups and downs. It’s about two young professionals in Los Angeles, both working on their career whilst trying to navigate the difficulties of their relationship.
With ISM’s closure and the way we live is being changed slowly by this pandemic, hopefully these shows can make staying home more bearable!
mochamilk (Youtube) PG
Sometimes we don’t want to watch things that’ll make us cry more. This channel is perfect for those times- it’ll definitely cheer you up. Mocha and Milk are the two dogs featured on this channel, and the videos are about their day to day lives. They have a lot of videos, including videos of the dogs doing ASMR with beef, and of them going trick-or-treating.
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a new strain of coronavirus, which is a large family of viruses that can cause a range of illnesses from the common cold to more severe diseases. It was first detected in Wuhan China in late 2019 and has now spread all over the globe. COVID-19 has also reached here in the Philippines and has caused the president to initiate a quarantine on Metro Manila and suspend all classes until April 14.
1. Wash your hands
Make sure to wash all the parts of your hands, like in between your fingers and your nails, for at least 20 seconds. To make sure you have washed your hands for at least 20 seconds, you can do things like sing happy birthday twice or sing the alphabet song while washing. If you want to use hand sanitizer, make sure it is at least 60% alcohol. Make sure to clean your hands especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
2. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and face in general
Try not to touch your eyes, mouth, nose, and your overall face with unwashed hands because the germs can transfer from your hands, onto your face, and into your body. Not touching your face not only keeps you safe from COVID-19 but many other contagious diseases as well.
3. Social Distancing
Social distancing is when you distance yourself from people to avoid the spread of a contagious disease. Part of this is staying indoors, as going out can lead to germs passing from one person to another. This could lead to the disease to spreading even more. Social distancing is one of the reasons that the President has suspended school, work, and transportation.
4. Cover your cough
Cover your coughs and sneezes by coughing or sneezing into into the crook of your elbow or into a tissue and throwing the tissue away. This can stop the water droplets from spreading to other people, keeping both them and you safe.
5. Boost your Immunity
Boosting your immunity is a great way to stay safe because the stronger your immune system is, the easier it is for your body to fight off the virus. You can boost your immunity by eating a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, exercising , drinking lots of water, getting enough sleep, and maintaining proper hygiene.
