‘Don’t forget your hoodie,’ I often tell myself before going to school. Whenever I forget to bring my hoodie, I definitely feel less productive in class. My body locks up, cuddling itself into a big ball, then would lose interest in whatever task I had given- the brain too apparently froze up!
After all, I was not the only one to feel that way.
I asked multiple middle school students of International School Manila (ISM) if they find the classrooms chilly or cool. Here are a few comments that they made:
“It is cold in certain classrooms.”
“Very cold.”
“Not really.”
“Yes, and a lot of students don’t know how to change the temperature, so it stays that way.”
“In some classes, it’s like I’m in Antarctica!”
What is the Ideal Temperature in Classrooms?
Cornell University states that 21-26°C is the range of ideal temperature for air conditioning. One study has demonstrated that excessively hot and cold temperatures have an immediate effect on the students’ ability to learn and focus in class. This is because of the body’s thermal discomfort, making the brain to prioritize in maintaining homeostasis- organisms’ adaptation to keep the body internally stable from external conditions, eventually fogging the students’ ability to concentrate on their schoolwork.
A 2014 study on high school students shows how air conditioning temperatures can have an impact on how they perform and score in exams. When the air conditioner was set at 27.1°C, the students scored an average of 72%. As the temperature dropped to 16.1°C, the average became 76%. At 22.2°C, which is within the ideal temperature range, the students received the highest scores, reaching up to 90% (SitelogIQ).
What If I’m Not Cold?
You may not wear your hoodie or cuddle up your body for warmth. Maybe you even feel snug and sweaty, and that is okay. Our bodies are all born differently and we have various levels of comfort and reactions to certain temperatures. ONiO explains the reasons behind why we have distinct levels of appropriate temperatures and what factors affect body temperature:
Age
This can be easily observed between children and the elders, as younger people tend to have higher metabolic rates than older people. Metabolic rate is the rate in which the body converts food to energy on average; higher the metabolic rate, higher body temperature they have. This is proven by how the age group of 65-75 have higher maximum body temperatures than the 75-85 and the >85 age group.
Sex
Although it is found that there is no significant gap between male and female body temperatures, in 1993, a study discovered that female participants have a slightly lower body temperature than male participants. It can also be noted that female body temperature increases during ovulation and pregnancy, while decreasing at the start of the menstrual cycle.
Time of the Day
Corresponding to the level of metabolic activity, body temperatures can change throughout the day. It is usually lowest during sleep and increases as the day progresses.
Exercise or Physical Activity
When the muscles become active, they generate heat to balance out unnecessary energy in the body. This is because the body has the tendency to stay in a normothermic state, where it maintains a normal body temperature.
Stress
Certain stress hormones can increase the body temperature as an adaptive response to confront possible threats. Adrenaline, for example, increases the body temperature in the liver- one of the most metabolic active organs in the body.
Meals
Adding on to the age factor, the increased metabolic rate to digest food in the body causes its temperature to go up. If you feel warmer and cozier after 20-30 minutes of a meal, that’s why!
ISM’s Sustainability Program
As an eco-friendly school that advocates a sustainable environment, ISM has regularly educated the students to become positive contributions to our Earth. There is the Eco-Council where middle school students work to spread awareness about sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the school community. Some programs that the Eco-Council has led include the Seed Saving Drive, BYOC Campaign, and Recycled Materials Donation Drive.

Hydrofluorocarbon(HFC) and its Environmental Effect
But did you know? Cooling is one of the biggest contributors to global warming. Cooling equipment such as the air conditioner and refrigerator uses a group of artificial gasses called hydrofluorocarbon on a working fluid known as refrigerants. Hydrofluorocarbons, HFCs in short, represent an estimated 2% of total greenhouse gas globally (Climate & Clean Air Coalition). Showing that they have a greater impact on global warming than carbon dioxide per unit of mass.
However, it is very clear that humans are using more and more HFCs for their own convenience. While air conditioning and refrigerating takes up 47% of the global HFCs used in total, its usage is continuing to grow over 10% each year (Climate & Clean Air Coalition). Furthermore, the International Energy Agency states that in 2021, air conditioning for cooling took 16% of electricity consumption in a building, indicating a massive energy waste worldwide.
What If We Increase the Air Conditioning Temperature?
Let’s start with a common misconception. Did you know that it takes the same amount of time for the room to reach its set temperature, whether it is set at 27°C or 18°C (Saran, Sabari)? This is because the thermostat in the air conditioner checks the room’s temperature and stops the compressor when it is at the desired level.
“Each degree increase in the AC temperature can save about 3-5% electricity,” states Ajay Mathur, director general of TERI (The Energy & Resources Institute).
If the temperature is turned up to 22-27°C, the potential energy conservation would be around 20 billion units; conserving 960kWh of energy than when it is at 18°C in a year. If 50% of consumers follow to set the temperature at 24°C, 10 billion units of electricity can be saved, which is equivalent to reducing 8.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually (Saran, Sabari).
What Other Benefits does Increasing the Temperature Have?
Increasing the air condition temperature not only helps the environment, but it benefits the school in reducing the power bills. According to one research done in India, if the temperature is raised to 24°C from 18°C, about 4,000 Indian Rupees ( ₹), if it is up to 27°C, 6,500 Indian Rupees ( ₹) can be saved in a year; possibly sparing an average of 6,240 Indian Rupees ( ₹) (Saran, Sabari).
In addition, in a tropical country like the Philippines, placing your body through extreme high temperatures from outdoors and low temperatures of the classrooms can be unhealthy to the body (Saran, Sabari). The Wellness Terminal advises that a sudden decrease in temperature from hot to cold is harmful for people- particularly those who suffer from chronic colds. The drop in temperature along with humidity increases the risk of infection; even worsening heart and vascular heart diseases. This quick change in temperature makes the body’s skin, mucus membrane, and the eyes dry, which can lead to eye infections, flu, cold, sore throat, and muscular spasms. Demonstrating how instant temperature shifts poorly affect our health.

What We Can Do to Make Changes
Within a reasonable reach, how can ISM make positive changes to the school community? Here are several suggestions from the Aircon Advisory Centre:
Be Aware of the Temperature Setting
Each reduced degree on the thermostat consumes more energy. If the school can moderate temperatures or provide air conditioning guidelines in classrooms, it can crucially reduce energy consumption. Meaning that finding a balance between convenience and efficiency through regulations and continuous effort is the key to achieve a sustainable community.
Use Natural Ventilation
Circulating air, by opening the door, windows, or placing fans, could provide cooling in the classrooms. Especially during the dry season, doing this can reduce our dependence on artificial cooling, which is vastly common today. However, it is important to be flexible in the rainy season and on extra-hot days of the Philippines!
Green Roofs
Green roofs are natural insulators that cover the entire roof with vegetation and plants. They reduce the conduction of heat, provide insulation, and create a cooler indoor environment, in addition to being sustainable. In the long term, it will lower the demand for air conditioning and reduce the wasting of both energy and money that can be used more effectively.
How to Keep Cool
Simple actions can easily make changes in the indoor temperatures to stay cooler. For instance, closing the blind of the windows reduces unwanted solar heat coming into the classrooms. According to Realsimple, medium-colored drapes with plastic backings reduce heat by 33% and insulated cellular shades reduce heat up to 60%- showing a huge difference. Furthermore, closing the classroom door and blocking gaps between windows or doors helps minimize the amount of space, thus maintaining a lower temperature for a longer period of time. Another effortless act is to unplug unused appliances and electronics. This will prevent the classroom from getting warmer from the unnecessary appliances’ generated heat in the air conditioned classrooms.
So What?
As every student is responsible to learn and are educated on sustainability as well as the SDGs, it is essential for ISM to lead and set examples that encourage them to take part and show understanding in climate action. Particularly, in decreasing the level of needless energy consumption that happens daily throughout the school year; negatively impacting the environment.
The key is to find an equilibrium between our comfort and notion-based efficiency, like creating a guideline or regulation for comprehensive air conditioning settings and advocating for energy savings- eventually achieving a more sustainable and successful school community.

Girl math, girl logic. If you have been on social media platforms like TikTok when these terms were trending, you might have seen a video of a woman talking about how ‘girl math’ is considering anything bought with spare cash as free, or a woman dressed head-to-toe in pink explaining world events with ‘girl logic’. While these terms and trends are often seen as just a joke, in reality, they are far more detrimental to the feminist movement than they appear.
There is no denying that the media we consume heavily impacts our worldview and our actions, whether we realize it or not. Platforms such as TikTok are one of the prevalent places where trends spread like wildfire. Take the Stanley Cup, where worldwide revenue nearly doubled in 2023. This aligns with the rise of the Stanley Cup on TikTok.
Terms like girl math and girl logic became incredibly popular on TikTok, with 118.1k posts under the girl math hashtag.
Focusing on girl math, the trend typically involves the handling of numbers and, more specifically, money. Usually, girl math is about giving excuses for frivolous or irresponsible spending habits. One popular use of ‘girl math’ is: that when returning a purchase, you earn however much money you spent. For example, if you were to buy a 70-dollar dress and then return it, girl math would say that you have just earned 70 dollars.
On TikTok, an influencer going by the username Nikitadumptruck has over 725k followers and posts videos about major global events or topics such as the Russia-Ukraine war and sanctions. This influencer talks about these topics with language she intends to be ‘for the girls’. She accomplishes this by using references to popular media such as Mean Girls and speaking in terms that are most commonly used when gossiping.
Viewers have had issues with this influencer's method of delivering world news. It has been brought up how she appears to be dumbing down topics and labeling them as ‘for the girls’. Her content is harmful to the feminist movement and to all girls who want to participate in fields involving their intelligence.
Women have fought to be treated equally to men for many years in terms of intelligence, but despite this, women are still perceived as less intelligent than men. A study by the CBNC has shown that the probability that women are selected for jobs involving a “high-intellectual ability” dropped by 38.3% when compared to being chosen for jobs that did not call for a high IQ.
Girl math and girl logic are not helping this statistic, as these trends support the idea that women are less intelligent than men. Girl math makes women appear superficial, looking for any excuse to justify irresponsible spending, and girl logic furthers the concept that women cannot understand complex topics like international conflict unless they are described in incredibly watered-down terms or compared to a piece of popular media.
As trivial as this might seem, with the popularity and reach of these trends, they can influence our view of others, whether it be consciously or unconsciously. This can lead to the enforcement of sexist gender roles, diminishing women into more domestic roles as they are perceived to be less intelligent than their male counterparts, and preventing the presence of women in STEM or political fields. According to UNICEF, more than 120 million girls do not attend school, showing how girls already face difficulty gaining access to an education and, in relation to that, being viewed as intelligent.
Gender equality will never be improved if misogynistic ideas are furthered by women. ‘Girl math’ and ‘girl logic’ portray girls as stupid, unable to understand complex topics, and irresponsible. This is harmful to women's education as well as the perception of their intelligence. Women are still viewed as less intelligent, and many do not have access to education.
If society wants to decrease the gender inequalities present in intellectual fields and general opinion, women need to stop enforcing misogynistic ideas with these trends. Not to say that women cannot have fun and joke around, but being mindful of the image portrayed by these trends is key to preventing the anti-intellectualism of women.

“If the kids haven’t learned the concepts by the time they leave the classroom…homework is pointless.”
-- Heather Broos, Livona, Michigan
Homework.
It's a word every student dreads. It is the spark of anxiety in our hearts, the kindling that feeds it. Some choose to avoid it, choosing to face the wrath of teachers rather than do the work. Others spend countless hours every night scribbling meaningless phrases until they collapse at their desks. Either way, the lifestyle homework demands is a recipe for mental and physical disaster.
At times, it may seem impossible to escape these meticulous assignments. Many articles attempt to argue for the benefits of homework, while denying the undeniable facts that state the contrary. I believe that it can be beneficial, but only in the right doses. 12-14 year olds should spend a maximum of an hour and thirty minutes, so they have time for themselves. When students spend an average of 3.1 hours studying out of school, that fire of anxiety ignites once again. The drawbacks outweigh any benefits homework might provide.
One of the most notable effects of homework is that instead of going out and being social, students are stuck in an isolated room writing nonsense. An article by Healthline highlighted a survey by Stanford University in 2013. Researchers surveyed 4,300 students in 10 California high schools. They discovered that every student was ‘more likely to forgo activities, stop seeing friends or family, and not participate in hobbies’.
At ISM, we spend eight hours a day at school - not counting the extracurricular activities our community strongly encourages. While activities only last for an hour, athletics last almost double. Thus, someone could spend up to nine hours and 45 minutes on this (the) campus! That is over a third of a day, including the time we are asleep. The dire mental toll this takes is best explained with a quote by Shahzain S, ‘-it feels like my home is not my home anymore, but school is. I live at school and visit home’.
Another serious side-effect of over-studying is physical fatigue. When you sit at a desk with a hunched back and cramping fingers, staring at a computer screen for hours on end, it is indisputable you will end up with physical symptoms. Several interviews reveal that the most common side effects in 7th grade; neck and back pain, eye strain, intense headaches, panic anxiety, and fatigue. These are all symptoms that are shared with the elderly community! Not to mention, parents and teachers alike agree excessive screen time is bad for your eyes, mind, and sleep schedule.
A survey on March 5, 2024 interviewed 7 and 8 graders in ISM and questioned them about their homework. This revealed that on average, ISM middle school students spend 2.5 hours on a normal week doing homework.
What about during…assessment week?
Although it is not an official title, ‘assessment week’ is a widely accepted term (among students in middle school) to describe a treacherous time. The school crams all assessments together haphazardly. Most students, no matter what grade, hate it with a fiery passion. Although the limit is 3 per day (2 on Wednesday), the school clearly is not following its own protocol. Alishba S, Shahzain S, and Janice L. have both experienced Wednesdays with an exam each block. In fact on Monday, March 18, 2024, I had five assessments. During these dreadful days, students have an average of 3 hours and 45 minutes per day simply studying. Consequently, teenagers have limited time to build themselves as people. Considering this is one of your brain’s main functions as a teen is worrying. What happens when you exit high school, college? What happens when you no longer have a constant stream of homework? What happens when you have not built up enough of yourself to find a purpose in life?
There are occasional benefits. If you cannot complete something during class, it can serve as a way to catch up. It can improve your time-management skills and help you learn to set goals. This is part of what makes seventh grade Social Studies particularly loved; the teachers will only assign homework if you cannot finish it in class. However if the time surpasses two hours, there is no longer any time to understand your identity. An article by STU Library said that you should spend no more than 1-2 hours of consecutive study time, as it can help you remember more information and avoid procrastination. This tracks with my personal preferences, as it leaves time for yourself.
Just because there are some advantages doesn’t mean it cancels out the disadvantages. If homework is given in excess, it can ruin sleep schedules, social connections, and physical health. With that being said, what should ISM do?
While it is the student’s responsibility to advocate for change, the school staff has the responsibility to hear our voices. Teachers and students should abide by ‘hour and thirty minutes maximum’ rule for better work in school. In addition, teachers should make sure they are communicating with each other to ensure there are no more than three assessments per day. With these changes, we can lower ISM’s stress levels and create a more productive, eager, healthier environment.

What should come first? Entertainment or basic necessities? Fun or a United Nations SDG? No one would say that a want should come before a basic need. But, again and again, entertainment thrives as water dries. It’s not just me that sees the absurdness of this.
A Thirst For Water
In the midst of a global water crisis where hundreds of millions don’t have access to water and water scarcity is projected to worsen 80% of croplands by 2050, a high number of golf courses continue to flourish with grass that comes with high-water usage. Many popular choices for golf courses’ grass are extremely lush and green types. Using these types of grass is a widespread practice among these courses in hopes of enticing golfers to play on it. However, there has never been any evidence to prove that grass color makes a difference in attracting golfers to play.
In addition, 2021 saw the first ever declaration of a water shortage in the state of Colorado, US. Many pointed to the golf courses in anger. Coachella Valley in Colorado has one of the highest concentrations of golf courses in the world, at a count of one hundred and twenty.
Doug Thompson, an ecologist, visited and asked groundskeepers how much water they take to irrigate a golf course. Thompson recalled, “He proudly said they had just computerized their system and they were down to 1.2 million gallons a night.”
While this was for the golf courses on the larger side, smaller courses would still use hundreds of thousands of gallons per night. In contrast, an average American only uses 100 to 175 gallons of water per day. One golf course in Coachella Valley could use the equivalent water usage of one to ten thousand Americans everyday.
This high usage of water is not just exclusive to Colorado. The one hundred and fourteen golf courses in Utah use a combined twenty-one million gallons daily. In 2021, residents of Utah were called upon to take measures to conserve water with their governor stating that 90% of Utah were facing extreme droughts. Water supplies from the Colorado River Basin, a river that passes through Utah also dropped. At the same time, data received from certain golf courses in Utah showed that golf course water consumption increased during the same year that Utah was facing a massive drought. Data has also found that golf courses use more water than livestock daily. Amidst droughts and water shortages, it is becoming increasingly harder for golf courses around the world to justify their water use. As such, golf courses have become a target of anger and criticism.
Being Targeted
But, it is not just golf courses that have a high amount of water usage. Football fields, baseball fields and others have come under fire for high water usage as well. Many golfers also believe golf courses are unfairly targeted by people for its water usage while other sports are relatively ignored.
As a footballer myself, I am fully aware that football fields require high amounts of water. However, while that amount of water is high, it is significantly less than golf courses. It has been found that an average football field requires 100,000 gallons a week. On the other hand, baseball fields at top levels such as Major League Baseball (MLB) use approximately 60,000 gallons of water a week. Baseball and football also generate more revenue and profit as more people play (“The Most Popular Sports In The World.”) These baseball and football fields also inherently allow for a more multi-purpose use due to their flat surface whereas terraformed and heavily maintained grass makes it harder for golf courses to be used for other recreational and outdoor activities. In recent years, there has been more clamor that continuing golf as a sport is no longer viable and it is insensitive to the growing need of water in many areas of the world and I agree. This raises questions about the future of the sport yet there is still hope for golf to continue thriving.
A Return to its Roots
Golf has changed drastically. It has evolved, just like a tree to spring up many branches of changes throughout its long history. In my opinion, golf can no longer sustain itself with its current practices. It is starkly obvious that as water scarcity grows in severity, it is wasteful as well as insensitive to continue watering with drinking water and using types of grass simply for their color. Golf must now adopt new branches of sustainability. One criticism of golf courses is how they use up so much land just for golf. To combat this, future golf courses can adapt their terrain to become more versatile to serve more people and generate more jobs. In line with this shift in terrain, existing golf courses can also opt for grass that needs less water. This water should also be sewage treated water and not potable or drinkable water to help combat water shortages and save further. However, more drastic measures have been proposed. One would be permanently downsizing golf courses. While this would require a big change, it would significantly lessen the need for water as well as free up vital space for other developments. Golf is a far cry from its origins on rocky hills in Scotland. Back then, it had zero carbon footprint, requiring no special irrigation or terrain destruction and reconstruction. Golf enthusiasts say that the game was born in nature and is meant to be played in nature. Now, maybe it’s time for golf to return to its roots.
“80% of garment workers in Bangladesh have experienced or witnessed sexual violence and harassment at work, with 90% saying their job is negatively impacting their health.” (Action Aid International)
The textile industry, often perceived as a place of vibrant colours and creativity, is seemingly innocent on the outside. However, a calamitous and dangerous side is revealed at the core of the industry.
Bangladesh, as a whole, solely relies on the textile industry. It serves as a crucial part of its economy. It generates an astounding 85% of its total exports, while the industry’s size is over $19 billion. In addition, Bangladesh is the second-largest global producer of garments, with it contributing towards 7.9% of the global share.
Being such a large-scale developer of one of the largest industries in the world, the issues of this industry have become prevalent. On a bustling, bright, sunny morning in April 2013, the Rana Plaza, a textile factory in Dhaka collapsed to the ground. In that incident, over a thousand people met the end of their fate.
The tragedy made its way to global headlines, marking the textile industry's dark side. This collapse was a result of the dire ignorance of several higher-ups, who ignored the dozens of warnings about the structural integrity of the Rana Plaza.
Since then, multiple disasters have occurred, leaving devastation in their wake. This includes the Tazreen factory fire in 2012. The blaze claimed 112 lives in Dhaka and further showed us why this industry threatens its workers. It was a result of an electrical short. The fire swiftly reached the workers, where there was no opportunity to escape because of the blocked fire escapes.
Besides the incidents that have taken place, workers have to deal with perilous chemicals. Many workers are part of the cleaning and softening process, which has been shown to lead to brain, blood, and lung cancer. Besides various fatal aspects, several employees have reported ergonomic issues, which have made their hours feel longer and more tedious.
The thought of this industry shutting down may arise considering the number of horrific accidents that have occurred. However, this option is not viable. This industry provides hundreds of thousands of people with jobs. It propels Bangladesh’s economy, and the world would be severely impacted.
However, the recent global pandemic, COVID-19, and its devilish claws made their way to the garment sector. Within 5 months of the pandemic, 96 textile workers were infected. As well as that, the deaths of workers with undiagnosed fever and respiratory issues have skyrocketed.
As the textile workers were called to return to their factories amid the pandemic, workplace fear arose once again. Many employees perceived the virus to be severe, which has led them to have mental health issues.
Numerous organisations have stepped up to make the textile industry a place where workers don’t have to worry about their well-being.
One of these organisations is the Asian Development Bank, a bank that promotes economic and social development. It has worked closely with dozens of textile industries over many years. Currently, ADB’s priority in Bangladesh is to ensure the safety of textile employees.
Bidyut Saha, an ADB analyst who works closely within this industry, says, “Maintaining social standards is of paramount importance for the continued operation of this important export-oriented industry. ADB has been providing long-term financial assistance for enhancing social standards and safety within the workplace.”
In addition, Avesh Patil, a Principal Investment Specialist for ADB has expressed, “The textile industry is a critical component within the overall economy of Bangladesh, contributing to 85% of its exports. Due to its size, it is necessary to guarantee the safety of the textile workers.”
With this in mind, the International Labour Organisation proclaims that having a safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental human right. So, it’s crucial to know that safety issues in the workplace are a vital issue in the Bangladesh textile industry that has to be further addressed.
As the world strives towards a better place where everyone works in a safe environment, action must be taken in third-world countries. Far too many people are facing the negative effects of the hazardous reality of this sector.
Everyone must remember the third-world countries. Remember the terrible tribulations they experienced. Remember that every piece of clothing you own could have been made in hostile conditions. Remember the darker side of the Bangladeshi textile industry.

You wake up from your peaceful night of sleep. You get up and open your phone to check out what’s happening on your Twitter page. The first thing you see is a post with a gigantic toilet. Not a normal one. One with a human head attached to it. And the person thinks it's funny. How? The answer is humor. Modern Humor. What’s modern humor you say?
Gen Alpha Humor is used to describe the humor used by Generation Alpha, or Gen Alpha in short. Gen Alpha are people born after the year 2010. Meanwhile, Millennials were born from 1981 to 1996. Generation Alpha’s are now gliding towards their teenage years, where social media is a prominent influence and they can spread what they perceive as “humor.”. However, in recent times, Gen Alpha’s unusual humor has waged a war against Gen Z and Millennials. Some of the older generations are rushing to the anti-Gen Alpha humor club, while some of the younger ones defend and stand with Generation Alpha.
Some of this unusualness and controversy link to Skibidi Toilet, a machinima web series of YouTube videos and shorts created by Alexey Gerasimov on his YouTube channel. In the series Toilets with a Human Head and “Cameraman,” the joint of the camera head and the human body. This has received criticism all across all social media, and many claim this to be “brain-rot," media that holds little artistic value and negatively impacts those who consume it, characterized by only serving to produce a quick dopamine hit. The series lacks artistic depth due to the repetitive characters and the fact that a human head is attached to a toilet. Business Insider states that after watching Gen Alpha kids trying to explain Skibidi Toilet, many had flashbacks of their parents failing to justify the bizarre references to their humor and what the younger generation perceived as “Millennial brain rot” with jokes like “Epic bacon," a word to describe something cool that received controversy just like the ever-growing Gen Alpha’s beloved “Skibidi Toilet," implying that all humor, whether it is from Generation Alpha or Millennials, has gone through a phase of time where it has been criticized for being meaningless.
Others, instead of criticizing it as brain-rot or meaningless, are saying it’s too weird to be considered funny. However, Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor of digital media at the University of Alabama, argues that “generational divides have always been played up to some extent,” which provides context for why different generations are accusing each other of being strange and uncanny. Psychology Today claims that “humor often involves the violation of expectations,” which provides further context for why Generation Alpha and other generations strive for individuality when it comes to humor and many other things. Generation Alpha has a unique set of vocabulary and uses words that dumbfound their elders. Phrases and words like “Fanum tax" are used to describe the theft of food between friends. “Rizz” is used to describe someone's charisma, along with "Sigma,” which classifies a person as successful or masculine. In an interview with the New York Times, Jaedynn who is an ordinary Generation Alpha kid said, “If Millennials start using these, we’ll be done with them now.” This just shows how Gen Alpha individuals want to be distinguished from Millennials and other generations.
Sometimes people have deep and strong opinions against Generation Alpha humor, but “the more you rail against certain humor, the funnier it gets,” says Rebecca Jennings, a journalist at Vox. Twitter and other social media platforms have experienced a burst of arguments and fights about Generation Alpha. Some people say it’s ok humor, and some people say society is doomed, but the criticism that Gen Alpha humor has become an inside joke that is used to mock the people who criticize the humor. There is an entire genre dedicated to TikTok to mock Millennials, and Generation Alpha humor has become a way to enrage Millennials on social media.
Generational conflicts and differences have been common throughout the years. Millennials and Gen Z have been criticized for their weird humor before, but now it’s time for Generation Alpha. While the older generations perceive this kind of humor as nonsensical, others see it as a valid form of entertainment and laughter that can be transformed into inside jokes and fun mockery. What can be learned from this is that people should accept differences when it comes to humor and entertainment, as the younger generations are unlike the older generations. Individuality should be strived for, and humor should not collapse just because somebody has a different and individual set of jokes, vocabulary, or entertainment.
Why Taylor Swift is more successful than Kanye West
By Ivana Mipruri
4/26/2024
46-year-old Kanye West has been a rapper and songwriter since the mid-1990s. He has about 24 Grammy awards, but what makes 34-year-old singer and songwriter, Taylor Swift more successful than Kanye West? This is due to contentious things Kanye West has done in the past and is continuing to do.
We’ve all heard of the long-going feud between Taylor and Kanye, but what went down? It all started on September 13, 2009, when Kanye West rudely interrupted 19-year-old Taylor at the MTV Video Music Awards. When Taylor Swift was awarded for best female video for her hit song “You Belong With Me.” Kanye West went up to the stage to interrupt Taylor by saying "Yo, Taylor, I'm happy for you, I'ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!" This was very rude and disrespectful to Taylor. Shortly after Taylor told reporters, "I was standing on stage and I was excited because I'd just won the award, and then I was excited because Kanye West was on stage … And then I wasn't excited anymore after that."
Image from Vox of Kanye West taking the spotlight from Taylor Swift while she was receiving an award.
On September, 15 Taylor Swift disclosed that Kanye called her to apologize. Later that month Kanye gifts Taylor flowers after the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.
At this point, everyone had thought this feud had been resolved, but Kanye pulled another controversial move. He presents his new song “Famous” at his Yeezy show featuring an inappropriate dig at Taylor Swift. Following the backlash,
Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss Jaime King, and many more of Taylor's Friends defended her after Kanye West officially released “Famous.” Taylor was aware of being name-dropped but she claims she wasn’t aware of the other inappropriate lyrics about her.
On June 24, 2016, Kanye West went below the belt by releasing his new music video to his latest song “Famous” which included a naked sculpture of Taylor Swift. Friends of Taylor stated the music video was sickening and disgusting.
Don’t get me wrong, Taylor Swift has gotten into some controversial situations as well such as when her fans called her out for being quiet when it came to politics, especially in the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. When Taylor Swift declined to endorse any candidate in the 2016 elections or to speak out against Donald Trump. Taylor got an enormous amount of backlash for this. In 2022, Taylor was one of the celebrities called out for using private jets. This contributes to an excuse for CO2 admissions and is hazardous to the environment. The small amount of controversial things Taylor has done doesn’t compare to what Kanye West has said and done.
In 2021 Kanye was going through an incredibly public divorce with Kim Kardashian. This was around the time he was coming out with his album Donda. This all came out at a listening party in a massive stadium he held for this album. At one point he reenacted his wedding night with Kim. He had a woman in a white wedding dress come up to the stage while he theoretically lit himself on fire.
One of Kanye West’s first public blunders happened on September 2, 2005, during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina's devastation in Louisiana. This was during an NBC fundraiser hosted by actor Mike Myers. When Kanye West blurted out his thoughts about the president saying that George Bush doesn’t care about black people, this became a very awkward moment on the broadcast and became a moment Kanye West fans fondly remember.
