Speaking from my own experience I think music can be beneficial to my learning. Music, as known, can set the mood for what you wish for it to do, and can impact the way you focus, and the way you learn.
Listening to music that has been proven to help learn and concentrate, like lofi music can help you enjoy the music but also be able to study and pay attention in class. Lofi music has a slow and relaxing beat which can improve concentration and quality of learning. However for me, some songs with a fast beat helped get things done faster. The faster beat clicks a switch in my brain which makes me get my work done faster whilst allowing me to have the same efficiency in my work.
Another reason why listening to music helps is that students do not get bored. Many people get bored during classes which makes them lose concentration. Music is fun, and not boring, though it depends on what music you are listening to. I listen to music in almost all of my classes since I lose concentration quite easily, but music helps me refocus and get my work done in time.
Many students, like myself, have made playlists specifically for studying or for class. This is a good choice because you are the one who can pick the songs which can improve your learning and concentration, making a playlist just for your learning is beneficial because you are the one who knows what type of songs you like to listen to, and which ones help you concentrate better. There are a bunch of pre-made playlists which mostly contain lofi songs. You can find these playlists on Youtube, Spotify, Apple Music, and more music platforms.
Based on what ISM grade eight students have said, music does indeed help concentrate, but some also said that it depends on what type of music you listen to. Hard rock music would probably not help as much as lofi or songs with a slower and quieter beat. students also said that it's better to listen to music while in a class which requires less social interaction. For example math class-you’re doing math which does not have any words unless it is a word problem, otherwise music allows you to focus on your work but still be able to enjoy it.
After gathering and asking a bunch of 8th graders, they mostly agreed that music does indeed help concentrate, but it depends on what kind of music you’re listening to, if it's hard rock, or something that can be distracting, obviously you’re going to lose track. A former grade 8 student said. “As someone who’s currently listening to music while doing math work, it does help me concentrate but it can be distracting because it can cause you to go down a rabbit hole not related to the work you’re doing” Many other students said it also helps them stay motivated and relax their mind, but maybe if it's their favorite song, and they might just start singing along which cause them to lose concentration and get distracted. Yet overall most students responded by saying that music indeed helps you concentrate but only if it's the right kind.
