Crushes are something that nearly everyone experiences in life, and especially in middle school. Endless psychological studies have been done, researching what exactly makes up a crush and how they’re developed. Crushes can make you do a lot of things that you typically wouldn’t do, or may not feel comfortable with under normal circumstances. However, crushes do play a significant part of many adolescents’ lives, and little do people know that there is a lot more to crushes than it seems.
Identity crushes are formed when one is interested in another person and wishes to be like them. One admires and glorifies all aspects of that person. Identity crushes are almost always based solely on a set of personality traits that someone wishes to have. Identity crushes can also be seen as role models or idols.
Next up are squishes! Squishes are similar to identity crushes, in that they are both platonic. With identity crushes, one desires to be like another person, but wit squishes one wishes to be friends with the other person. Squishes may not start out as romantic, but often develops into the crush that you are most familiar with - romantic crushes.
Romantic crushes are formed when you feel a sudden, intense attraction to someone for no apparent reason. You aren’t mentally aware when this feeling occurs, but it often comes with increased heart rate, obsessive thinking, and the feeling of butterflies in your stomach, explained Stephanie Cacioppo, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at The University of Chicago, in an interview with INSIDER. These romantic crushes can develop into deeper feelings and even love in some cases. In all cases, the individual crushing will strive for approval and attention from their crush.
The last type of crush is a celebrity crush. These are very common, especially in adolescents. These crushes often embody an ideal that people want, but typically have no serious feelings or attraction.
These are the different types of crushes that most people have probably experienced at one point or another, and all are completely normal. Hopefully, this article helped you better understand crushes, and hopefully now you can identify what kind of crush you might have!

Many MS and HS students are getting nostalgic and sad because ‘their decade’ is over. So what are some of the highlights and defining moments of the 2010s?
2010s were a pivotal decade, where many Disney stars became the pop icons we know today. These are the top five viewed Disney TV shows by ISM students, and their opinions about why.
“Who Will Be the Family Wizard” - Wizards Of Waverly Place, January 6th 2012 (approx. 9.8m views)
2. “Special Delivery” - Good Luck Charlie, June 24th 2012 (approx. 7.5m views)
3. “Star Wars” - Jessie, January 6th 2010 (approx. 7.32m views)
4. “I’ll Always Remember You” - Hannah Montana, November 7th 2010 (approx. 7.1m views)
5. “Walk a Mile in My Pants” - Sonny with a Chance, March 14th 2010 (approx. 6.3m views)
Why Were these Shows so Popular?
The episode from Wizards of Waverly Place was the debut of the final season, which means that advertising was heavy and the series already had an established fanbase. A person who really liked the show said, "That’s awesome, of course it was," while many others were shocked. Someone who really did not like the show said, "Ew no, Selena Gomez? ...No."
In Good Luck Charlie, a new family member is born, which is one of the most important moments in the series. This was one of the earlier episodes in the series, which meant that the episodes leading up to it must have been hyping it up. A fan of the show said that they could understand why, because it had "a good storyline and Charlie was cute," while a critic of the show said it was "annoying."
The episode of Jessie was at the beginning of the first season of the show. It had a guest star, Lachlan Buchanan, who was an Australian actor, and that may have generated some buzz, as well as the fact that it was a new Disney Channel show at the time. A fan of the show said that it should be the top most viewed, while another person said that it’s a lie.
In the episode from Hannah Montana, Miley is struggling with leading her double life after it affects her relationships. The episode is the ninth in the last season of the highly successful series and shows a very important moment. A fan of the show said, "Hannah Montana was my childhood, I loved that show," while another person said that Miley Cyrus was another one of those child stars who ruined her life’.
The episode of Sonny with a Chance is a fundraiser episode where they have to wear skinny jeans with a nasty side effect in order to raise money for their various causes. The episode was the first in the second season of the series and was very well advertised. One 8th grader said that it was,"surprising because not many people had heard of it."
These Disney shows have shaped people’s childhood and have given them many happy memories. As the decade draws to a close, the next generation can get ready for more happy memories and amazing shows.
Recently, the library has become device-free before school. This left many students upset and wondering the reason behind the action. Here are two sides of the decision and why the rule was created!
Christine S.
Why Was The Rule Created?
MS librarian, Ms. Walker, says she believes the intention behind this action was to help give students a break from their screens (which are often used extensively during class periods). In addition, the rule helps students to take advantage of the opportunity in the morning to "unplug" and connect with their peers and friends face-to-face. She says, “From my perspective in the library, it seems that the rule has not impacted students’ lives in any negative way.”
Why Is This Rule a Good Idea?
The rule gives students a break from devices in the mornings before class starts. Before the rule was created, most students would go on their phones without much interaction with their peers. But this rule gives them a chance to socialize with friends and classmates, providing the opportunity strengthen relationships. Instead of sitting next to others and being distracted by phones and computers, students sit with friends and talk to one another, which is healthy for everyone, especially as adolescents start their day. Furthermore, more students have begun to play games, work on puzzles, color, and read, which exercises the mind, as a sort of prep for their upcoming classes.
Why is This Rule a Bad Idea?
Students may want to work on homework or complete assignments before class starts due to the lack of time to complete them the night before. They may also need to contact family members or friends urgently. Many students argue that since it is before school, they have the right to look at electronics because school hasn’t even started yet.
The question of if it’s a good decision still remains unanswered, as many students and teachers have differing opinions.. However, the rule seems to be having a positive effect at this point, as many students are interacting with one another before school hours, putting them in a better mood to learn throughout the course of the day!
