President Rodrigo Duterte is currently under mandatory quarantine after being exposed to a COVID-19 positive staff member. According to Malacañang, Duterte was exposed while he was in the palace.
His Cabinet Secretary and acting presidential spokesperson, Karlo Nograles, the President is currently undergoing quarantine in the comforts of his home. Nograles told the public that President Duterte was exposed to his staff last Friday, January 28. He allegedly took a PCR test the next day which turned out to be negative. To be precise, Duterte was retested for COVID-19 on February 1st and this test turned out to be negative as well. Although the results showed that he didn’t catch the virus, he is still observing mandatory quarantine protocols. He also had his COVID-19 vaccine last year and recently got his booster shot.
Duterte is considered immunocompromised due to his age and other comorbidities. The president who is 76 years old refuses to make his medical records available to the public. He supposedly has spinal problems and was reported to have been involved in a motorcycle accident when he was 68 years old. Duterte recently went to Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan for his “routine medical check-up.” His physician there stated that Duterte is as healthy as any healthy individual at his age would be according to Nograles.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), a person should be tested 5 days after being exposed to any COVID positive individual. This is because COVID doesn’t usually show in tests until the 5th-6th day. Though this is different for everyone so it can take up to 14 days. Duterte will be tested for the virus again February 4 or February 5.

On February 1 Manila was reduced to COVID Alert level 2. This eases a lot of restrictions in the Philippines and people are allowed out of their houses again.
After the Omicron variant was recently discovered a few months back in the Philippines, cases have been going down gradually. Vaccination rates are also rising as kids of younger ages are also allowed to get vaccinated.
The level 2 alert level means that kids can go back to schools if it is a test school like ISM. Most businesses, tourist attractions, and indoor and outdoor venues can reopen 50 to 70% of their full capacity. Social gatherings may also commence.
As the first case of the Omicron variant was discovered on December 15 of 2021 cases had kept rising to 37 thousand cases and the alert level was 3, until about January 17 when cases were slowly decreasing.
As more people are vaccinated against the Coronavirus there was a proposal to remove the COVID alert system altogether and prepare for the pandemic to become endemic. Citizens in the Philippines also say that the government should deal with the fast spreading, fast mutating virus quicker.
In the past few days there have also been talks about going back to normal school instead of hybrid and for the COVID-19 alert level to 1. As kids even younger than 12 also get vaccinated, COVID-19 is definitely slowing down and the main focus should be building up the economy again with the GDP contracting by 9.6% year-on-year. COVID has ruined most of our lives for a while now and we have now started to learn how to live with it which is great advice.

Current President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte will choose 3 individuals to replace those leaving the COMELEC, the branch of the government that manages the elections. As of February 2, 2022, the terms of 3 executives of COMELEC expired, leaving a hole in the organization - one to be filled by Duterte.
With the rising tensions between the presidential candidates, (some of which are Bongbong Marcos, son of the infamous Ferdinand Marcos, Manny Pacquiao, a famous boxer, and Leni Robredo, the current Vice President), the people Duterte will choose will play a crucial role in ensuring the legitimacy of the ballots.
“The President has a short list already of potential nominees for the appointments,” said the President’s spokesman Karlo Nograles at a press briefing on January 31st, 2022.
However, an organization called Participate PH rallied over 2,500 organizations to sign a petition asking for the new officials to be publicly chosen, or at least have the process of choosing these officials to be transparent and open, in order to prevent favoritism and bias.
“We call on President Duterte to immediately disclose to the public said short list”, they said in a statement. They also demand to know the standards and expectations Duterte will use to determine the new members. “The public has the right to know,” they added.
In the past, COMELEC members were usually appointed by the President and approved by the Commission on Appointments, but President Duterte has taken matters into his own hands this time around, which is the main reason that Participate PH are making these demands.

The US Navy are rushing to save a F-35C fighter jet that crash landed on a US Air Carriers last Monday. The jet hit the carrier and then fell into the ocean, taking its highly classified technology with it.
When the F-35C crash-landed on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson during routine operations, it injured six sailors and the pilot who had ejected from the plane before it fell into the sea.
The plane is one of the most advanced current US fighter planes, packed with highly classified technology costing over $100 million, and if found would cause an intelligence boon for China. In fact, China claims almost all of the South China Sea as its own.
The F-35C is a version of the plane specially designed to operate from aircraft carriers. Experts have said it could take a US salvage ship over 10 days to even reach the site of the crash, potentially giving Chinese submarines the opportunity to find it first.
The Pentagon spokesperson, John Kirby said “We’re certainly mindful of the value of an F-35 in every respect of what value means, and as we continue to attempt recovery of the aircraft we’re going to do it obviously with safety foremost in mind, but clearly our own national security interests. And I think I will just leave it at that.”
However, a foreign ministry spokesman in Beijing, Zhao Lijian, stated the Chinese government has no interest in finding the crashed plane. “I noted relevant reports. This is not the first time that the US had an accident in the South China Sea,” he said.
“We have no interest in their aircraft. We urge the country concerned to do things that are conducive to regional peace and stability, rather than flex muscles in the region.”

The US’s total national debt surpassed $30 trillion on January 31 according to data published by the Treasury Department on Tuesday.
The Covid-19 pandemic helped fuel the soar in national debt, where the government spent trillions of dollars mitigating the big blow on the economy.
Accumulating debt will have a big impact on American taxpayers, "we're on an unsustainable path," Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told lawmakers last month. "Debt is not at an unsustainable level, but the path is unsustainable -- meaning it's growing faster than the economy, meaningfully faster than the economy. We have to address that over time. We will address it over time. And the better way to do it is soon.
“Interest costs (from government loans) alone are projected to surpass $5 trillion over the next 10 years and will amount to nearly half of all federal revenue by 2051”, according to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.
US national debt is projected to continuously grow in the following years, estimated to reach 40 trillion dollars by 2031. A decrease in funding can make it harder for the government to respond to crises like they did with relief packages in the Covid-19 pandemic. "If we don't get our fiscal (financial) house in order, all these other concerns like climate, inequality and national security will be made more difficult," said the Peterson Foundation.
Skyrocketing debt will come with consequences to the US with higher taxes and budget cuts for government funded benefits and services. With more interest to be paid off, the government will have to redirect more money towards repaying them.

During a joint news conference with the Hungarian Prime Minister on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the US and NATO of trying to push Russia into a war with Ukraine that it did not want. Also stating that NATO had not satisfied his demands yet though he hoped the dialogue between them would continue. “But it is already clear that Russia’s fundamental concerns have been ignored,” Putin said during the conference.
In recent weeks the tensions between Russia and the West have been building after Russian troops started to grow in number along the border sparking fears in NATO of a possible invasion of Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly denied this however and has claimed it has no such plans.
So far, NATO and Russia have been in dialogue attempting to find a peaceful solution to the conflict though so far NATO has not accepted any Russian demands. This all culminated into the accusation made on Tuesday by Putin of the West trying to push them into a war it does not desire.
Russia believes that NATO should not be allowed to expand into the East, particularly former Soviet countries. It also believes that through these talks NATO has continuously ignored its concerns. “Let’s imagine that Ukraine is a member of NATO, is stuffed with weapons there are modern offensive systems, like in Poland and Romania and begins an operation in the Crimea,” Putin said. “Do we have to fight with the NATO bloc? Has anyone thought anything about it? It seems not.”
Peace talks continue with both sides hoping for a diplomatic end to the tension.

Japan sought a way to recommend it despite strong objections from South Korea over it’s forced labor during wartime. The Japanese government on Tuesday decided to recommend the Sado Mine to UNESCO heritage. In the past people have mined gold and silver, according to the local report from Japan.
Following the announcement provided by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the Japanese government has submitted a letter of recommendation for the gold and silver mines ahead of the deadline, Kyodo News reported.
South Korea’s government immediately launched a task force including officials and experts to respond to Japan’s move, expressing it is an attempt to “cause conflicts between both countries and politicize UNESCO.”
South Korea’s minister of foreign affairs expressed, “strong regrets over the decision of Japan, and will summon the ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in Seoul.”
More than a thousand Koreans were exploited and forced into hard labor at the mine on Sado Island.
The move is expected to deepen dark relationships between South Korea and Japan over shared history.
Large majority of Koreans strongly believe that Japan has yet to apologize for its historical cruelty, during 1910-1945 colonization of Korea and offer proper compensation for the victims.
The Sado mine originally was discovered in the 17th century and operated as a gold mine. However, it was turned into a facility where they produce war-related materials, such as copper, iron and zinc during World War II. It was completely shut down in 1989.
According to historical documents, as many as 2000 Koreans were forced into hard labor at the mine during the colonization of Korea.

The world might go through another major conflict.
January 30 2022, 7:52 AM Pyongyang time, North Korea conducted its seventh missile launch of the year. The latest ballistic missile, the ‘Hwasong-12,’ is thought to be the biggest missile launch since 2017, and in response, the United States, asked the United Nations Security Council to meet privately over the issue.
The launch of the intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) was first reported by South Korean and Japanese authorities on the same day. The missile was fired in a near-vertical trajectory, landing 800 km east on the Sea of Japan (East Sea, South Korean name), threatening both South Korea and Japan. The maximum range of the Hwasong-12 can reach as far as the eastern tip of Russia, the Philippines, India, and even Guam, a territory of the United States.
The (North) Korean Central News Agency explained that “The test-fire was aimed to selectively evaluate the missile being produced and deployed and to verify the overall accuracy of the weapon system.”
Meanwhile, South Korean President Moon Jae-in stated that the launch brings North Korea a step closer to resuming their tests for longer-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).
Following the launch, on the 1st of February, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Pyongyang "to desist from taking any further counter-productive actions.”
The United States asked to hold an United Nations Security Council meeting on this controversial issue, supported by the United Kingdom and France. Previously, in the UN Security Council meeting on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, the United States and Russia shared tense exchanges. It was previously seen in January, where China and Russia delayed a U.S. bid to impose U.N. sanctions on five North Koreans.
Furthermore, the South Korean presidential election is coming up this March. Regarding why North Korea is taking these actions, Dr. Pinkston from Troy University stated, "this is consistent with their past behavior to try and intimidate South Korea and the incoming president."

Peter Robbins, the voice actor of Peanuts protagonist Charlie Brown, famous for lines like “I got a rock…”, takes his own life at age 65, on January 18 in Oceanside, California.
Peter Robbins was born in 1956 with the name Louis Nanasi, whose parents were immigrants from Hungary fleeing post world war II. He got the job as the voice actor of Charlie Brown at 9 years old, and he played the role until he was 13, when his voice started to break.
Peter Robbins had been struggling with mental illnesses for most of his adult life, trying to handle his addiction and bipolar disorder. He even served some time in jail for threatening and stalking.
Peter Robbins said he would have really wanted to get help for his mental illnesses back in his “manic phase,” where he bought 2 sports cars and a pit bull he named Snoopy. He said “I would recommend to anybody that has bipolar disorder to take it seriously, because your life can turn around in a span of a month like it did to me.”

The small island nation of over 100,000 people had been hit hard by the major Tsunami that occurred on January 15 and is now forced to deal with the pandemic brought about by the arrival of rescue teams from countries around the world.
“Our country has now faced its biggest catastrophe in its entire history,” said Tonga Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni. “We call upon the international community to continue helping us provide basic supplies and services to people to ensure their health and well-being.”
On 15th of January 2022, a series of volcanic eruptions of the volcano Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai and the tsunamis that followed caused devastation and loss of lives in Tonga.
The eruptions damaged the submarine cables and have resulted in loss of communication with the outside world. Assistance were made difficult due to lack of information based on what's happening on the ground.
The volcanic ashes that covered the airport made it impossible for airplanes to land for rescue operations.
Rescue operations begin in a week later with people coming from Japan, Australia, New zealand, etc. However the Omicron surge complicated the rescue operations as dozens of them were tested positive upon arrival in Tonga.
The government has feared that infections would spread in the country already while coping with the severe impacts of the disaster.
Tongan authorities continue to investigate the unknown mystery of which ship carrier brought the virus to the small island. "The most important issue at the moment. Is for us to slow down and stop those who have been affected," said Siaosi Sovaleni according to CNN.
As of now, the Australian Military ship has detected 23 covid-19 cases on board which might result in the Tonga localists to catch covid-19.
The first reported case of Covid-19 among the citizens will force the governments to keep in mind about how they will need to carefully consider the need for assistance against the need to prevent more Covid-19 infections.

Scientists discovered a new species of coral reefs off the coast of Tahiti, French Polynesia last November.
“When I went there for the first time, I thought, ‘Wow — we need to study that reef. There’s something special about that reef,’” Laetitia Hédouin, a researcher at the FNCSR in French Polynesia states. Last November, a team of researchers accompanied by scientists and photographers traveled and explored the coast of Tahiti, more specifically the location of these mysteriously new coral reefs. The dive expedition was supported and partly funded by UNESCO, and besides the new type, the team was able to measure corals at least six feet in diameter, and coral spawning, which is the act of synchronization multiple species of corals go through to reproduce.
The Polynesian reef sits at 100 to 210 feet deep, which is substantially lower than the standard depths of other corals, lying 82 feet below water. This unusual depth, scientists concur, may help protect it from human activity that could easily damage its growth and coral spawning capabilities. As the years progress, more coral threats have been created, varying in severity. A notable example would be coral bleaching. Corals are saltwater invertebrates that feed on microscopic algae called zooxanthellae that live in their tissues. Climate change is the principal cause of coral bleaching.
“French Polynesia suffered a significant bleaching event back in 2019, however, this reef does not appear to have been significantly affected,” Hedouin says in a statement. “The discovery of this reef in such a pristine condition is good news and can inspire future conservation. We think that deeper reefs may be better protected from global warming.”
These coral reefs are said to look like the terrestrial plant “Rosa” or rose, and their unique beauty truly marks their difference from other coral reefs.

After beating other renowned players, such as Mateo Berrettini and Denis Shapovalov, the Spaniard had advanced to the finals. Under pressure, he dropped two sets and was , close to defeat. But then, Nadal made an impressive comeback, winning the next 3 sets, and winning the tournament, as well as claiming the record.
In an interview, Nadal described the game as “one of the most emotional matches” of his entire career.
After a grueling 5 hour ½ game, at 1:11 am, Nadal steps up to claim his trophy.
“I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the fight. I enjoyed the emotions. At the end, to have this trophy with me means everything, .” - Nadal said after the match.
Winning the Australian Open meant the Spaniard had beaten the rest of the Big Three in the race to crack the record.
Before this tournament, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal had been in a 3-way tie. They all had 20 major career titles under their belt and were competing to get to 21.
However, the other two shared nothing but love and support via their social media.
“To my friend and great rival, Rafael Nadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles,” Roger Federer
Nadal speaking in the on-court interview after the match.
Rafael Nadal broke the record of winning the most Grand Slams after he beat Daniil Medvedev 2-6 6-7 6-4 6-4 7-5 in the Australian Open final on January 30th.
It was an epic final with long points and rallies. Nadal climbed up to the win as he was 2 sets down.
Many doubts have been made by people about whether Nadal isn’t on top of his fitness after he was missing the second half of 2021 due to a foot injury.
However, he came back to action in Melbourne at the start of January to win his first ATP title ever since he got injured.
As he won, he dropped down on the floor exhausted, as he played for five-and-a-half hours.
"Being honest, one and a half months ago I didn't know if I would be back on the tour playing tennis again and today I am here in front of you with the trophy again," Nadal said.
"One month and a half ago I would have said it would be my last Australian Open, but now I have a lot of energy to carry on. I can't explain the feelings I have now, but I'm going to try my best to come back next year," Nadal continued.
The 35-year-old Spaniard was previously tied with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic with 20 Grand Slams.
Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic are well known as ‘The Big Three’. They are the players with most Grand Slams. The rivalry has been going on for 2 decades.
He’s won 21 out of the 63 Grand Slams he’s ever played. That is exactly one-third. He’s also reached the final at 29 of the 63 Grand Slams he’s played.

Athlete Using Iphone At The 2022 Beijing Olympics
Many countries are currently instructing their athletes to not bring regular devices into the borders of China. Instead they were told to travel with burner phones so as to not increase the risk for “malicious cyber crimes”.
On February 4th, 2022, The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics successfully began, however it did not come without distrust from participating countries. The FBI informed and warned athletes that they shouldn’t expect privacy while in China; if regular mobile phones are brought or athletes connect to the free Wi-Fi provided, they should be prepared for all their personal information to be vulnerable to infiltration. According to olympic skier Anna Hoffmann, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee provided new phones and numbers for athletes leaving for the event.
“The USOPC has provided us with a lot of safety measures to make sure that we’re cyber safe,” said Anna.
"It should be assumed that every text, email, online visit, and application access can be monitored or compromised," the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee said in an advisory.
The modern surveillance and security that China has access to, makes the country a place that is tightly monitored. An official olympics app that has raised controversy is My 2022, however what officials have realized is the information on this app is already accessible to Chinese authorities and a central database. The app itself will be mainly used for daily Covid monitoring by athletes, audience members and the media. It's been said by the cybersecurity group Citizen Lab that the app itself does not provide encryption on many of its files; although China has dismissed these concerns. Built into the app were a list of “censorship words” says The Citizen Lab, with some of the words making references to previous conflicts in China. Examples of this being the 1989 protests at Tiananmen Square, the names of Chinese leaders and government agencies.

Tom Brady #12 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the 44 year old arguably GOAT “Greatest of all time” officially retires from the NFL.
On Tuesday February first Tom Brady contacted Tampa bay buccaneers general manager Jason Licht to inform him that he wants to officially retire to spend more time with his wife and 3 children. He officially announced on Instagram that he wanted to thank his teammates, coaching staff, agents and of course his family.
"I have always believed the sport of football is an 'all-in' proposition -- if a 100% competitive commitment isn't there, you won't succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game," he said.
"There is a physical, mental and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life. This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore.
"I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention. I've done a lot of reflecting on the past week and have asked myself difficult questions. And I am so proud of what we have achieved.”
"My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it's best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes."
His decision brings the quarterback known as the "GOAT" – the greatest of all time – to an end after a 22-year career. In New England, where Brady spent 20 seasons with the Patriots before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 for two seasons, his team was considered a likely bet to win.
Brady's retirement, on the other hand, was not surprising: he was the NFL's oldest active player this season, at 44. He stated that he wished to spend more time with his family. His resignation was cited as a result of his wife, Gisele Bündchen, and his three children.
Brady noted in his statement that he will continue to work with the companies he co-founded, such as the NFT platform Autograph, clothing firm Brady Brand, and fitness and health brand TB12 Sport, in his future plans. His future intentions, though, are "in the works," he said.
Brady set numerous records during his career, including the most Super Bowl appearances (10), Super Bowl wins (7), most touchdown passes (624), passing yards (84,520), playoff wins (35), regular season wins (243), and so on.
Brady, 44, retires after winning seven Super Bowls in three decades and breaking every quarterback record known to man. He's a living legend, but it hasn't always been easy. He put in long hours throughout his career and will continue to do so after he retires.
