Free language workshops with Cardiff University Student Mentoring Project

MFL Mentoring is a Welsh Government-funded project that supports the uptake and visibility of International Languages in schools and the ambitions of the new Curriculum for Wales.

Our project has successfully worked with over a hundred and seventy secondary schools in Wales, with on average half of the mentees going on to take languages for GCSE. We offer three different streams that schools can participate with: Year 8/9 Mentoring, Linking Language Workshops, and a combination of both.

European Day of Languages

Throughout Europe, 700 million Europeans are represented in the Council of Europe's 46 member states and all are encouraged to discover more languages at any age, as part of or alongside their studies. This stems from the Council of Europe’s conviction that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent. Therefore, the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg, promotes plurilingualism in the whole of Europe.

At the Council of Europe’s initiative, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September - together with the European Commission.  You can however, celebrate this on the day, for a week or even on another day. The website has access to competitions, activities and suggestions for making this day one to inspire, celebrate and remember: https://edl.ecml.at/

This reference guide is is for people working with learners who use or are learning more than one language. It deals with how to create educational experiences for them that enrich their knowledge and their understanding of a subject. This can give them a good grounding for continued, natural development of their language skills outside language lessons, and can make the most of their bilingualism.
