Support for Welsh in English Medium schools
This document provides on overview of the support available for Welsh in English-meidum schools through Universal, Targeted and Bespoke provision.
Modelling Welsh across the school day and other AoLEs
A variety of videos with useful Welsh phrases and vocabulary for school staff to use informally and throughout the school day e.g. language for tidying up time 'amser tacluso'; going home time 'amser mynd adref' and other contexts. Key language can be recycled and linked together to provide practitioners with a varied repertoire of Welsh phrases to use throughout the school day with confidence.
The link will take you to key language for practitioners to use in other subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, P.E. and Expressive Arts as well as a generic mat. Each language pattern is translated for reference and the mats are accompanied by short videos to support pronunciation and practice. Most of the language acquired may be recycled and applied to other contexts. The idea is to learn step by step. Linking patterns together over time will provide practitioners with a vast repertoire of language that will provide good modelling for learners during the school day, across different areas of learning and experience and contexts.
Resources and Exemplification
EAS Planning for Welsh and the Welsh Language Continuum
The EAS Welsh language continuum is a resource to support the progressive planning, teaching and learning of Welsh in the primary setting and for transition. The language functions and associated language patterns may be revisited and recycled in different contexts at different levels of sophistication, according to the pupil's stage and progress in the language. Consolidating key language patterns to allow building and extending is key to develop pupils' confidence when speaking Welsh inside and outside the classroom.
The EY/FL language continuum is a resource to support the progressive planning, teaching and learning of Welsh in the Early Years setting. It supports the language patterns for PS1 as identified in the main continuum (above) by breaking down the sentence patterns into year groups from Nursery to Year 2.
Foundation Learning
There are 25 fans to support the use of questions and answers in Welsh as part of Foundation Learning . The principle behind their use is that the images will serve as an aide memoire to support recall, thus developing confidence in speaking Welsh from an early age.
The resource 'Mistar Enfys' will enable practitioners to explore feelings and colours with their children and pupils through the engaging character of Mistar Enfys. All the accompanying resources will support children and pupils to use their knowledge of colours and feelings across the developmental pathways through rich, engaging and stimulating experiences.

The resource 'Y Lindysyn' (The Caterpillar) will enable practitioners to explore the wonder of the natural world with their children and pupils through the medium of Welsh. All the accompanying resources support the development of language as well as knowledge of the lifecycle of the caterpillar across developmental pathways through rich, engaging and stimulating experiences.

Year 2-3 Transition
Developing Speaking and Listening in Years 3 to 6
The placemats from Year 3 to Year 6 support the oracy development of all pupils to ask and answer age appropriate, conversational and incidental questions. The placemat provides scaffolding for pupils to learn and practice the appropriate sentence patterns and the baselines allows the pupils to record their progress. This is a great resource to support daily Welsh sessions and the use of incidental and cross curricular Welsh.
A set of exemplar sentence builders and games to develop speaking, around the seasonal language patterns: 'Beth wyt ti'n hoffi wneud amser Nadolig?' (What do you like doing at Christmas?), 'Beth wyt ti'n hoffi wneud yn Hwyl y Gaeaf?' (What do you like doing in the Winter Wonderland?') and 'Beth wyt ti'n wisgo i 'Hwyl y Gaeaf?' (What do you wear to the Winter Wonderland?).
