Leadership and Teaching:

At Chepstow School Professional Learning is an integral entitlement to all members of staff. All practitioners should have access to quality professional learning to enable them to deliver high standards of learning within their classrooms and wider learning environments. We support practitioners to realise and fulfil the four purposes of the curriculum, supporting learners with additional learning needs and embedding well being and Welsh language across the whole school community. Our professional learning offer is focussed on local , wider and National priorities and is also bespoke to support the individual practitioner.

Curriculum: Business Studies and/or Social Science

At Chepstow School as a lead partner school for Business subjects, we promote and facilitate peer collaboration and high quality support to develop effective learning approaches across schools teaching business qualifications. These qualification pathways include WJEC general certificate and advanced level, as well as BTEC level two and three. Bespoke and tailored support including pedagogy, exam skills and engagement approaches are undertaken with schools based on individual requirements to enhance teaching and learning practices.

Curriculum: English / Literacy

As an EAS partner school for English, Chepstow School offers an array of expertise tailored to the needs of successful curriculum development. We thrive on developing good practice both within our department and the wider EAS community. The creation of resources to support progression, engagement, and challenge, are of a particular interest to us. We are also keen to share our experience as a wider LLC faculty, specifically how we bridge the connections between languages and English in our quest to negotiate and explore the challenges of the developing Curriculum for Wales.

Curriculum: Health and Wellbeing AoLE

Wellbeing is paramount to the success of everyone at Chepstow School; creating a culture whereby the focus is specifically on the development of the child. Together, we achieve high standards and aspirations for all, tackling the impact of poverty on attainment and ambition. Our passion is equity in education, removing barriers to enable every learner to have access to an inclusive education, being healthy and happy, incorporating the highest level of learning. Our wellbeing team support each young person, building their resilience and fostering a sense that there is someone that they can trust.

Leadership and Teaching:

Our school is on a rapid improvement journey, underpinned in every area by four focussed whole-school strategic objectives. Our academic structure is organised into a faculty system, with Directors of Faculty being part of our substantive extended leadership team. We have a proven track record of senior and middle leadership having a positive impact on the quality of teaching, and pupils’ progress.  Leaders at all levels have a clear picture of our school’s strengths and areas for development in teaching and learning, and consider a wide range of evidence in our self-evaluation processes.

Curriculum: English / Literacy

Our school recognises the importance of developing communication and language skills in line with the objectives of the Curriculum for Wales. We are committed to collaboration with other schools in the EAS and beyond to share resources, knowledge, and expertise. The English department has decided to focus its new curriculum on the main threshold concepts of studying English language and literature; these will be developed and spiral over time and through the progressions steps. Our focus in Year 7 is to discover the origins of communication so we begin by travelling back to Ancient Greek literature; we visit Homer’s Iliad, Troy along with other famous myths and legends including Beowulf. We move, in the Spring to Medieval literature from Dante’s Inferno to Chaucer and Sir Gawain. Finally in the Summer term we look at Renaissance literature including Shakespeare. It is our hope to fire and inspire children’s imaginations through our text choices. Over the course of the progression steps we will look at language and literature chronologically, covering a wealth of literature from our cannon and finish, what would be year 9 by looking at dystopian literature. Through our journey we will cover forms of Prose, Plays and Poetry. Our curriculum will be diverse and aims to look at a range of literature from African, American, to Asian and indeed Welsh. The 6 concepts we focus on are: Metaphor, Story, Rhetoric, Pattern, Grammar and Context. Through development of these concepts we are confident that our new curriculum will connect us, help our children to understand the world around them and to become eager lifelong learners.
