Curriculum : Pupil Wellbeing

Wellbeing is at our core and acts as the foundation to every facet of school life.

This philosophy gives us a shared and tangible vision, providing context for reflections, decisions and developments at every level of the school community.

Returning to school after lockdown presented us with many children displaying emotional fragility and subsequent behavioural challenges.

It was therefore essential that we developed a whole school approach and consistency across staff to nurture positive interactions, engagement and connection with our children.

The school has developed 'joined up thinking' permeating through policy and practice in key areas such as-

Staff have collaborated to refine understanding and develop a consistent approach when interacting with pupils, and particularly, when interacting with learners with emotional and behavioural challenges.

We can share our journey, tools that have been invaluable to us and systems that help us to track, monitor and respond to the emotional needs of children, enabling them to become effective and confident individuals and learners.

School to School

As an experienced head teacher and distributed senior leadership team,  we have the capacity to support a school with leadership including governance and support for teaching and learning. Our governing body is a strength of the school.  They are fundamental in the process of self evaluation and support the school through an established committee structure and carefully designed governor days. PL is important to the school and the governing body is included within this process. Support for teaching and learning would need to be discussed at an individual school basis.  We have a distributed leadership model that would provide the opportunity to support schools in a bespoke way

Professional Learning:  Leadership and Teaching

Blackwood Primary School is committed to providing the best learning experiences for our children in a no blame, risk taking culture where staff are encouraged to engage in research, professional enquiry and use external expertise. Staff view Professional Learning as an entitlement that supports and builds coherence linked to pedagogy and curriculum design.  Leaders consolidate what has been learned in a culture that encourages staff to use PL opportunities to evaluate and improve approaches to teaching and learning.

PL is planned through a combination of  whole staff, phase, team and individual foci. Strong links with EAS have provided opportunities to work with different models of research.  As a result staff value the professional learning that has an impact on their teaching.  Leaders within the school recognise the importance of providing time and resources to enable effective professional learning and the senior leadership team and governors are committed to supporting all staff with their engagement in continuous professional development. We have a wealth of experience on which we are able to support colleagues through our extensive work as a PL regional and lead school over time and contribute to the regional professional learning offer for teaching assistants , teachers and leaders.

Curriculum : Early Years

The pedagogy of the Foundation Phase has been the main driver for the curriculum from nursery to year 6 at Blackwood Primary School. A strong focus for curriculum reform has been working on effective pedagogy to support independent learning for all pupils. Staff have worked over several years to ensure that pupils have the opportunity to apply, use, consolidate and extend skills using a blended learning approach.  The learning environment at Blackwood Primary School is a key enabler for the curriculum. It has been developed in such a way that encourages pupils to be independent, to have a say in their own learning and to take increasing responsibility for it. The areas within the learning environment have been designed to allow all pupils to experience authentic learning opportunities both indoors and outdoors.

The role of the adult is extremely important when facilitating effective learning opportunities. Highly effective whole school PL has driven planning and assessment to support staff with progression throughout the school. We are able to offer support for nursery to year 2 but can also demonstrate how this pedagogy can be effective to embed real life skills up to year 6.

Curriculum:  Global Future / International Languages

Blackwood Primary School recognises the importance of developing international language skills in line with the objectives of the Curriculum for Wales. We are committed to collaboration with other schools in the EAS and beyond to share resources, knowledge, and expertise. Our International Languages lead ensures that we offer our pupils a wide range of languages and increased exposure to different cultures and ways of thinking. We believe that this is an important step towards creating a more inclusive learning environment that values all forms of communication.

Professional Learning:  Professional Learning Support School

Our school is a learning organisation where all leaders share a relentless drive for the pursuit of continuing excellence. The school’s ambitious mission to Excite, Challenge and Empower, is realised through three visionary principles:

We have a whole school approach to wellbeing, underpinned by 5 key elements which help us in putting our vision into action; Safety, Belonging, Agency, Efficacy, Love and Care. We adopt a coaching and mentoring approach to professional development. We pride ourselves on the rich and varied opportunities for professional learning we both provide and engage in. We have developed a strong culture of inquiry and exploration across the school.

Curriculum: English / Literacy

At Glan Usk we strive towards developing competent communicators who speak, read and write showing confidence and creativity throughout their literary journey.  We believe in nurturing independent learners through creative, purposeful and progressive sequential experiences that immerse the children in a world of curiosity and wonder.  Through these rich learning experiences, we encourage an appreciation of the culture, people and history for Wales, nurturing a sense of pride and belonging, whilst celebrating the diversity of our community.  Our consistent and progressive approach to planning and assessing Language, Literacy and Communication provides a robust climate to ensure progression of all.

Curriculum: Humanities  |  RVE

Our SHINE Curriculum is bespoke and reflects the diverse context of our school. It is research informed and is responsive to the needs of our school and current affairs both locally and worldwide.  As a cluster we have created a conceptual framework for Humanities which reflects our collective and individual school’s vision and rapidly changing contexts. Through our Humanities curriculum we encourage our pupils to become curious and ethically informed about the world in which they live, how it has changed and how it may change in the future. It is our intention that all pupils, irrelevant of needs, make sense of their physical world and their local community. Through immersive opportunities, pupils will explore, observe and investigate people, places and the environment. The conceptual framework  provides a balance of knowledge, skills and experiences in a geographical, historical and religious context that will shape pupils to make a positive change in an increasingly diverse and interconnected environment.

Sustained, highly effective leadership over many years has been key to the success of our school. Growing and developing staff through professional learning, ensuring clear roles and responsibilities and giving time and resources to do the job, support our effective distributed leadership model well. We have the capacity to support other schools in developing their leadership teams; middle leaders and senior leaders including governors. Governors skills and competencies are identified through a skills audit and are used to support their AOLE link roles. They are highly competent in participating  in whole school self evaluation and planning for improvement.

Professional Learning:  Professional Learning Support School

We have been a regional PL school for a number of years. This involves attending all EAS regional partner sessions and disseminating PL opportunities to schools across the cluster. We create opportunities for schools across the cluster to share the impact of any engagement in regional PL such as DARPL, Agile Leadership. We support the facilitation of national programmes delivered regionally such as the Middle Leadership and Senior Leadership programmes.  Over a number of years we have engaged in NPEP sharing research and enquiry projects regionally and nationally. More recently we have taken on the cluster enquiry lead role supporting schools across the cluster with engaging in research and enquiry. We have supported the NQT regional PL offer through NQT Live Practice events.

Leadership and progress in learning in oracy, reading and writing in English have been strengths in our school for many years. We have the capacity to provide professional learning and to share our practice widely across the EAS in the following areas: Voice 21 oracy strategies; guided reading and reading responses; writing using rich texts including across the curriculum; Alan Peat sentences; writing revolution strategies for non - fiction writing.

At Glyn-Gaer Primary we have a distributed leadership model that would provide the opportunity to support schools in a bespoke way. AOLE leads have processes in place to monitor the 'I can do' and 'I have experienced' aspects of the Curriculum for Wales, we incorporate pupil voice in all our work and believe Forest School/outdoor learning is one of our strengths. Our pedagogical approach is best shown through the TASC (Thinking Actively in a Social Context) method for which we are a training and assessment school.  Our self evaluation process is fully supported by a proactive Governing Body.

Curriculum: Welsh (English Medium) / Bilingualism

We would welcome practitioners to join us to see how we deliver Welsh in an English Medium setting to address the needs of our learners. Like many schools in Wales, here at Glyn-Gaer Primary we are steadily improving our bilingual skills using a range of activities e.g. games, pupil voice, book looks and workshops for parents. Through developing pupils' knowledge of vocabulary and sentence patterns through games and short activities, pupils have developed a passion for the language.  Come along to see for yourself!

As a Cymraeg Campus Arian school, Hendre Junior School has engaged with the EAS Cymraeg team as an Partnership School since 2018 to develop teaching and learning of Welsh as a second language.

Our school promotes a Welsh ethos through the use of incidental Welsh, where the language is at the heart of everything we do. We have adopted an approach to Cymraeg where through professional learning we offer ‘Dewch i Weld’ events, networking and best practice case studies to showcase how to enhance the Welsh language.

Our 'Dewch i Weld' events demonstrate how we use bilingualism around the school to model the language and raise enjoyment and engagement, to enrich and add authenticity to the teaching and learning through making links to other areas of the curriculum.

School to School

Leadership:

At Henllys, we ensure that all staff have clear roles and responsibilities within our staffing structure. Everyone is developing as a leader in some capacity and takes ownership of a wide variety of Action Plans linked to our SDP. For example, we have Action Plans in place for each of the AoLEs and also our Pupil Leadership groups. All staff, pupils and governors are regularly involved in our self-evaluation processes which drive school improvement. This distributed leadership model is bespoke to our school but can be highly effective in any school.

Assessment and Feedback:

Formative and summative assessment form an integral part of pupil progress at Henllys. Our consistent approach to marking and feedback presents pupils with a clear idea of their achievements, areas for further development and their progress towards targets. AfL is at the heart of our marking and feedback policy and is an approach which has clearly led to improved learner outcomes. Summative assessments are also used highly effectively, to track progress of individuals and groups of learners. They are also used as diagnostic tools to offer targeted support for all our learners.

Challenge and Differentiation:

At Henllys, we believe that it is important that all children are supported and challenged appropriately. Our teachers use a wide range of strategies, including differentiation, to ensure learners are challenged effectively to develop as ambitious and independent learners. Here we challenge and differentiate through level of support, task, resources, marking/feedback, expectation of outcomes and varied collaboration.  We would be able to demonstrate differentiation and challenge in planning, show this in classroom practice (through observations) and share evidence in a broad range of learners’ work across all AoLEs.

Teaching and Learning:

As a school we have a successful team of committed and dedicated teachers who pride themselves on delivering rich learning opportunities for our learners. Our team would be able to share their knowledge of effective teaching, that leads to very good outcomes for learners. All staff have been involved in writing our Teaching and Learning Policy which has a clear focus and encompasses all that helps to develop our learners to reach their full potential. Learners receive a broad range of learning opportunities that are carefully planned with input from all stakeholders to ensure progress from Reception to Year 6.

Professional Learning:  Professional Learning Support School

Church in Wales School:

Our vision is to provide an outstanding education, rooted in the Christian faith and values, where all learners are able to reach their full potential. As a faith school, we offer a ‘values based’ curriculum which ensures our pupils grow and learn together through the love of Christ. Values such as trust, humility and forgiveness are embedded within our ethos and through all our teaching and learning. Understanding Christianity underpins our RVE curriculum but we also offer pupils many opportunities to explore other faiths and belief systems.

Assessment for Learning:

AfL at Henllys, has been identified as ‘excellent practice’. By the time our pupils reach Y6, they have a broad range of AfL strategies and know how to use them to improve and enhance their learning. AfL forms an integral part in supporting learners on a day-to-day basis. It underpins the Principles of Progression, particularly increasing learners’ effectiveness and puts learners at the heart of assessment so they are active participants in their own learning. This is practice worth sharing - we are in a very strong position to have a huge impact on practices in others schools.

Curriculum Design:

Curriculum design has been an important development within our school to ensure that learners receive a broad and balanced education. In line with the realisation of the Curriculum for Wales, our school has been on a journey of transformation. Our curriculum design is a two-year rolling programme that focuses on one AoLE per term. We have a bespoke long-term planning tool that shows coverage and progression across our school. In addition, we have developed Planning for Progression Overviews in each AoLE and have our own short-term planning document that outlines weekly teaching and learning experiences in each year group.

Professional Learning: Professional Learning Support School

Professional learning informs and supports all aspects of our curriculum at Rhiw Syr Dafydd as we follow the Schools as Learning Organisations (SLO) model to develop and reflect upon our progress as a learning organisation. We have been involved in the development of regional and national PL programmes, including as a Curriculum for Wales Pioneer School and as a Lead Enquirer with NPEP, and we have supported schools and clusters with curriculum design and implementation.  A key focus and strength of our PL work is supporting the growth and development of new teachers; we are a lead ITE partnership school with USW and facilitate NQT induction. We have a large group of teachers with a wide range of experience, skills and knowledge to support our involvement in designing and facilitating the national and regional PL offer to support teaching assistants, teachers and leaders at all levels of their career.

Curriculum:  Film and Digital Media and/or Dance

At Rhiw Syr Dafydd, we use film-making and animation as a teaching tool across the curriculum and offer a range of Film and Digital Media experiences to learners, including creating podcasts; game design; and live events and theatrical design. Film and Digital Media is a highly effective way of engaging learners and developing cross curricular skills, including literacy, numeracy and digital competence, and we have introduced a progressive approach to developing Film and Digital Media knowledge and skills across the school. We understand that this is an area of the curriculum that is new to many schools and teachers, and we have the capacity to support others by sharing resources, hosting visits and sharing practice events, and enabling teachers to develop the skills and understanding required to implement Film and Digital Media in their schools.

Curriculum:  Global Futures / International Languages

At Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary, our learners experience a variety of languages and cultural experiences through the aid of different media and authentic, purposeful learning activities. Our focus is to build a love of languages and promote diversity and respect for other cultures. We offer a range of meaningful experiences: our pupils enjoy singing Cerdd Iaith songs in Welsh, Spanish and English in our whole school assemblies and are enthusiastic about the authentic links that the school is developing with native speakers and schools in Spain and Catalunya. We consistently encourage pupils to look across languages to find connections and make links. We look forward to sharing our journey with other schools across the region.

We provide training and support  on Enabling Learning and Observation, Assessment and Progression for learners ages 3-5.

This is an area our school has been successfully involved in for a number of years.  Our deputy headteacher and senior teacher have the role of external verifiers and NQT mentors and regularly contribute to supporting NQT’s through the facilitation of successful mentoring and network meetings for EV’s and NQT’s.  As a Professional Learning lead school we have established strong links with our cluster schools and facilitated supportive and informative network meetings always ensuring our cluster schools are updated with current practices and new initiatives shared from EAS. The head teacher has successfully and effectively been involved in the coaching and mentoring program and over-seeing the mentoring of NPQH candidates. Also through his role as SIP, he has provided targeted support to individual schools in teaching and leadership. Through our lead involvement with ITE, our ITE lead has established an effective link with HEI’s where we are able to support trainee teachers and facilitate SLT and synergy days. Our ALN lead has strong knowledge and understanding of the new procedures and has shared our practices to individual schools at a cluster level. Through our research champion and as part of the NPEP project we have developed research at a school and cluster level.
