Classroom Expectations

WELCOME TO IGCSE GEOGRAPHY
WHAT DO WE STUDY IN IGCSE GEOGRAPHY?
There are three key themes in Cambridge IGCSE Geography. The three key themes are:
•Population and Settlement
•The natural environment
•Economic development and the use of resources.
As well as the 10 topics below ,you will also have to learn geographical skills (reading maps, describing graphs and photographs, etc.) that will be tested in all three external examinations.
You will also have to learn how to write a piece of coursework, which will be tested in paper 4. You are required to know how to collect, manipulate, present, analyse and evaluate primary and secondary data.
Assessment week revision:
Please study Population growth and focus on case studies showing high and low birth rate, declining populations and other population policies. Also, see Google Classroom for more detail.
These units will be covered over the two years.

IGCSE Syllabus
The aims describe the purposes of a course based on this syllabus.
• an understanding of location on a local, regional and global scale
• an awareness of the characteristics, distribution and processes affecting contrasting physical and human environments
• an understanding of the ways in which people interact with each other and with their environment
• an awareness of the contrasting opportunities and constraints presented by different environments
• an appreciation of and concern for the environment
• an appreciation of the earth including its people, places, landscapes, natural processes and phenomena
EXAM SPECIFICATION
In summary IGCSE Geography is tested by three external examinations:
IGCSE Geography Paper 1: 1 hour 45 minutes (45% of final mark) - Knowledge and understanding of the 10 topics above. Geographical Themes
Candidates answer three questions, each worth 25 marks. Candidates must answer one question from each section Externally assessed
IGCSE Geography Paper 2: 1 hour 30 minutes (27.5% of final mark) – Skills
60 marks Candidates answer all the questions Externally assessed
IGCSE Geography Paper 4: 1 hour 30 minutes (27.5% of final mark) - Coursework knowledge

All candidates take Paper 2 and must answer all the questions.
The paper is based on testing skills of application, interpretation and analysis of geographical information, e.g. topographical maps, other maps, diagrams, graphs, tables of data, written material, photographs and pictorial material, and on the application of graphical and other techniques as appropriate.
Equipment required for Paper 2 Candidates should have the following in the examination room:
• a pencil, rubber, ruler, a protractor and a calculator
• access to a sheet of plain paper for measuring distance or for assisting with cross-sections on the large-scale map.
Mapwork question One question will be based on a large-scale map. The large-scale maps chosen for examination purposes will be on a scale of either 1:25 000 or 1:50 000 and will always contain a full key.

Short description of each paper
Paper 1Questions are structured with different levels of difficulty. They consist of a combination of resource- based tasks and free-response writing requiring place-specific information. For resource-based tasks, candidates should interpret and analyse the resource and use the data provided to illustrate their understanding of the concept being assessed.
Paper 2 – Geographical Skills Candidates do not need any place-specific knowledge to answer questions in Paper 2 . Questions are based on students ability to use maps, diagrams, graphs, tables of data and written material .
Paper 4 - Alternative to CourseworkQuestions test the methodology of questionnaires , observations and counts and measurement techniques, and involve testing hypotheses appropriate to specific topics .Questions also test processing, presentation and analysis of data
