Humanities Year 9

 Mr. Simon, Mr. Javier

Welcome to 2023/2024 Year 9!

We'll  start our academic year with our Geography units! Here we will learn more about both physical and human geography. We will consider the relationship between physical and human features and how our environment changes over time.

Later, in Term 2.  we will  commence History. We will take an in depth look at WW1 and the Cold War, including the causes and important effects of these conflicts on soldiers, civilians and the world. In global perspectives (term 3) you will develop outstanding transferable skills, including critical thinking, research and collaboration.

Year 9 is an important preparatory year, and all the content and skills covered will build a strong foundation for your KS4 years.

Why study geography?

"Studying geography makes you more appreciative of the world as a whole and of being a global citizen"

Plate margins and plate tectonics

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions affect people all over the world. They are caused by the movement of tectonic plates. Tectonic hazards can destroy buildings, infrastructure and cause deaths.

The crust is the outer layer of the Earth. It is a thin layer between 0 - 60 km thick. The crust is the solid rock layer upon which we live. It is either continental or oceanic. The earth's crust is broken into plates. It was once believed that convection currents in the mantle slowly moved the crust around. It is now thought that a mechanism called slab pull drives the movement of tectonic plates. Slab pull occurs where older, denser tectonic plates sink into the mantle at subduction zones. As these older sections of plates sink, newer and less dense sections of plate are pulled along behind. Sinking in one place leads to plates moving apart in other places.

International Development

This module provides an excellent foundation for IGCSE geography and global perspectives. We look at what development is, how development is distributed, how populations and jobs affect development and how trade and aid affect development.

This unit will help students to understand major world problems and be aware of problems that a lack of development causes. This unit inculcates a global consciousness which will help students become global citizens.
