Welcome to Humanities Year 8
Mr. Sulayman Ms. Amanda Ms. Ruby Mr. Saleem
Welcome to the Year 8 Humanities site. This provides an overview of our Humanities curriculum for the academic year 2023/24.
This overview is designed to be used in conjunction with the Google classrooms.
The Google classrooms will contain details of what the students are studying each week, and may in addition contain resources and assignments.
As and when assessment schedules are made available, the dates will be added here and on the Google classrooms.
Student Expectations
Effective time management to keep to deadlines - Students will need to take greater responsibility for their learning. Students’ progress will still be monitored closely and offered support should they fall behind with work - it is essential though that all do their best to adhere to work deadlines.
Academic Honesty - Students must exercise academic honesty in all aspects of their work.
Independent Learning - Students must continue to take responsibility for their own learning.
Skills
In Humanities we will be working to help students develop in the seven following key areas:
Research - Formulate appropriate research questions. Locate, select, organise and record relevant information from a range of print and multimedia resources.
Analysis - Identify perspectives and complexities, interpret data and information to make connections and recognise relationships, patterns and trends.
Evaluation - Evaluate sources within subject context, make connections, assess importance of features and/ or events. Evaluate judgments, decisions and arguments.
Communication - Select varied and appropriate communication methods (including diagrams, short written responses and longer essays) to effectively describe and explain specific subject content. Construct evidence based arguments that demonstrate understanding.
Collaboration - Actively cooperate and engage in teamwork, developing interdependence. Showing awareness and respect for different viewpoints and learning approaches.
Reflection - Consider the benefits and challenges of working in both teams and independently. Examine how personal perspectives on an issue may change. Identify skills learnt or improved during this process.
Subject literacy - Recall knowledge of and use subject specific terminology and vocabulary.
Assessment
Assessment will take place throughout the academic year. Assessment will be undertaken in the following ways:
Formal tests - notice will be given and areas for revision provided
Informal classroom quizzes and checks - notice may be given, but sometimes will be delivered on an ad hoc basis
Classwork and participation - all engagement and tasks allocated for completion during class time can be used to further provide the teacher with information about an individual student's competency and progress
