Welcome to Year 12 English General Paper for school year 2023-2024!

Revision Guide for Mock Exams

AS English General Paper Mock Exam Revision Guide January 2024

An important announcement about our resources and assignments during Continuous Learning at EMS: To avoid confusion on either parent’s or student’s ends, all of the class resources and assignments will be loaded onto the Google classroom. I post a daily agenda which I normally complete before noon EVERY day which includes assignments for students as well as newly posted resources. Because I keep all of the resources, which include amazingly thorough revision guides, past papers, PowerPoints, writing exercises, and projects on folders on my desk tops at school and home, the amount of resources available to all students in all classes is so large that the students will have everything they need to successfully prepare them for the May Examinations simply by clicking onto their Google classrooms, which they can do instantaneously on their devices by using the Google Classroom Ap. I would be delighted to give any parent who desires access to their daughter or son’s classroom an invite to do so and, as of this writing, most parents already have access to our Google Classrooms.

Best,

Gunnar

Explanation of Course - and Expectations:

AS General Paper is a compelling and intriguing subject that links both with the Secondary School English and Humanities curricula. In this course we explore a wide variety of themes and topics that address global contemporary issues and crises. In addition to analyzing current world affairs, we explore topics of a more general philosophical nature. As the subject is classed as an English first language subject, proficiency in analytical reading and persuasive and expository essay writing in English is essential. In sum, the skills developed in this course are critical thinking, analytical reading, and clear and stylish writing.

Resources

This is our course text...

but more importantly, English General Paper is the world around us! Students who wish to progress in this subject are encouraged to become avid readers, become dedicated TV news watchers and become questioners! 'Why?' should be the word on every General Paper students lips! In this case 'Curiosity won't kill the cat'  - it'll ensure a more rounded approach to answering the questions of our time! I will regularly pull the content from news stories going on around the world we currently live in and share them in the form of articles, videos, and other appropriate media.

Classwork and Homework

Lessons involve a lot of discussion and brainstorming, the occasional video and a great deal of writing. 'Best practice' is taught to hone writing skills and attention is drawn to adequate planning to ensure a sequentially logical essay. Homework is given weekly - and will take the form of a written essay (or similar written exercise) or research for completion a number of days hence.

New lessons are taught four times a week although the topic being covered may last a week in itself. Students are expected to keep up with all assignments and hand work in at the required time.

Work not handed in on time is not graded.

Term 1 gives students the opportunity to hone their writing skills to cope with the pressure of the external examinations. Students also receive a copy of the curriculum at the beginning of the year. Students may also access the curriculum at www.cie.org.uk
