The U.S. government went on a shutdown on Wednesday, Oct. 1st and shutdowns are not just harmful politically but also for the civilians who rely on government aid, the federal employees who are on furlough or working without pay.
The government shutdowns happen when the congress can’t come into agreement about passing bills that fund the operations of federal agencies and programs and these bills are meant to fund the government until the conclusion of the fiscal year which ends on September 30th of each year. The Republicans and the Democrats need to come into agreement about spending bills but this year the two parties were unable to come into agreement about the bill which caused the shut down.
The American political par ties are so divided it can’t come into agreement about the bill, it just shows you that the political parties can’t even come together for the betterment of the country, they have such vastly different beliefs.
What this shutdown means is that federal workers will have to go to work like normal but won’t be paid during this shutdown, others will be on furlough. This shut down also affects government funded programs and services such as the National Park and Museums services, social service programs like the Women Infants and Children(WIC) program which could run out of money in just 7 days in duration of the shutdown and the Housing assistance programs like Federal Housing Assistance(FDA). Just before the government shut down on Tuesday Sept. 30th President Trump said, “We’ll be laying off a lot of people.”
To end a government shutdown the President needs to sign the bill and Congress must pass the bill but the President doesn’t have the power to end a shutdown by himself.
The shutdown won’t end until the two parties along with the President can come into agreement about the spending bill for the next fiscal year.
