High school sports are worth the money. Sporting events generate a lot of money for the school through tickets and concessions. Also, participating in sports is more of an incentive rather than a distraction–you can't play if you’re failing three or more classes and your coaches will force you to attend the Scots Center.
Historically, Douglas has been strong at sports. We were the Mt. Hood Conference champion in soccer in 2023-24 season; we were the 15th seed during the 2021-22 football season, and we have made consistent playoff appearances in basketball so far as placing 5th in the 2012-13 season. Losing is a natural process when rebuilding and it gets misunderstood when we’re in a conference with Nelson and Central Catholic, both schools with heavily funded sports programs that pick up transfers left and right.
Everybody likes new stuff. I’ve never heard someone say they want to play in a jersey that has been worn since 1967. Having new equipment doesn’t immediately make you better but it helps build up the sports culture.
