This year's homecoming dance was held on Oct. 10 in the South Cafeteria with 730 students in attendance.
At the first assembly for the year, it was announced that the theme was Rio: Welcome To The Carnival. The South cafeteria was decorated with vines and birds, in order to match the theme.
“We want it to evoke ‘Rio,’ said ASB president Jacob Hall, “but we also want to avoid cultural appropriation.” The main area itself was full of colored lights and music, with a DJ on stage playing hits like “TV Off” by Kendrick Lamar, “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” by Soulja Boy and more. Students were dressed on theme or casual in order to dance unrestricted.
“We don’t do a formal homecoming dance,” said Hall, “we just want it to be lively and fun.”
In the hallways surrounding the cafeteria, the vibe was much more chill with a coat drop off, free snacks, and water for students who needed a break from dancing. Additionally there was a spot for students to take pictures with for a fun commemorative memory.
“It's pretty good, a lot of dancing and fun,” said senior DeShawn Stephens. “People are having a blast.”
During the Homecoming Football game at halftime, Seniors Luke Reeves and Ofa were crowned for the Homecoming court.
The days before homecoming were all themed in order to create hype and excitement for the dance. Monday was ‘Birds Of A Feather’ or Duo Day and Tuesday was ‘Show Your Wings,’ where each class was given a color to dress as. Wednesday was ‘Performative Final Boss,’ Thursday was ‘Jersey Day’ and Friday was the Homecoming Rio day where students dressed in theme with the dance.
