Esports, is a form of competition using video games. Even though it has sports in its name, it’s not widely accepted as a sport, and I think Esports should 100% be considered a sport.
I think esports fits the definition of sports. You can’t have injury without physical exertion, many athletes in the scene have suffered wrist, back, and elbow injuries. If you believe to exert physicality, you need to be sweating and breathing hard, with that logic golf, racing, and shooting, considered as sports and some even being in the Olympics, isn’t considered a sport.
Physical exertion is highly misunderstood, yes sweating and breathing hard can be a result of high levels of physical exertion but a mundane task as walking is also physical exertion, according to Oxford definition “any form of body movement that has a significant metabolic demand.” And yes gaming does burn calories from its competitive or intense nature increasing your heart rate, according to studies on average 130 calrioes burn per hour.
If the only thing stopping esports is a loose definition of sports then it is 100% a sport.
