Student workload is the amount of time students spend completing a course. This includes in-class time and out-of-class time (lab work, internships, studio work).
The U.S. Department of Education and our accrediting body (HLC) require institutions utilizing federal Financial Aid (FA) to document how in-class and out-of-class time equivalencies are determined for both in-person and distance learning courses.
The U.S. Department of Education (34 CFR 600.2) measures this in credit hours. One credit hour = 1 hour per credit per week of classroom or direct instruction + 2 (or more) hours of out-of-class student work for ~fifteen weeks, or 45+ hours per credit. No direct instruction = 45+ hours/credit. CSS uses this definition of a credit hour, regardless of venue or modality.
