We are looking forward to welcoming you to the upcoming Joint Advanced Seminar (JAS) 3 to be hosted by the University of the Ibadan (UI) in Ibadan, Nigeria from August 3- 26, 2015.
Arrival in Ibadan:
On arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, you will be met by a driver from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, who will take you to your accommodation (look out for a board with the CARTA logo when you leave the baggage claim area).
Visas and refunds:
Fellows may require visas to enter Nigeria; we will reimburse visas at $50 and airport transport expenses incurred at $70 on provision of original receipts.
Yellow Fever:
Please confirm the status of your yellow fever vaccination. It is advisable that you have your vaccination before your travel and ensure that you carry your vaccination card with you. There will be no reimbursement for any fees paid.
Malaria:
Before travel it is essential to take medication to prevent malaria. Visit your GP or pharmacist for malaria advice. If you are unable to do so prior to arrival, you are advised to take three tablets of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine within 24 hours of arrival in Nigeria. Those who react to sulpha drugs MUST NOT do this. We will make alternative arrangements for such people.
Prescription drugs:
Please travel with all your necessary prescription drugs for the duration of your stay.
Accommodation:
For CARTA Fellows, your accommodation has been reserved at the Postgraduate Hostel Block, Alexander Brown Hall, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. For further information on this, pleas contact Mrs. Olufunke Fowler, Phone Number: +234-812-309-2730.
Security:
University of Ibadan will provide round the clock (24/7) professional security services at the training venue and Alexander Brown Hall. You are advised not to travel alone and to always stay in after dark.
Meals and per diem:
For the duration of the training, CARTA will cover the cost of bed, breakfast and lunch. You will receive a modest per diem to cover dinner and incidentals. Please note that you will be responsible for any other bills you will incur at the hostel such as laundry. Personal bills will need to be settled before departure.
Conference Rooms:
The training will take place in the Oladele Ajose Building of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, University College Hospital Campus, Ibadan.
Local currency:
Please note that you need the local currency (Naira) to purchase goods. It is not wise to display a large amount of foreign currency in public as this may attract unwanted attention.
Adapter:
Please bring an international electrical adaptor for your computer and electrical gadgets. These can be purchased from the airport and you will be responsible for the cost. The sockets in Nigeria are of the British standard (three rectangular pins).
Power outage:
Occasionally, the area experiences temporary power outage. To manage the occasional losses of power a torch/rechargeable lamp will be provided in each hostel room.
Food/Water:
The food is typically spicy, we recommend you take your favourite dried fruit and a variety of ready-made tins of food types. Avoid drinking tap water; bottled water will be available at the seminar venue.
Weather:
The weather in Ibadan is warm, humid and wet through the month of August, with temperature ranging from 23 – 30 degrees Celsius. Bring an umbrella along.
What to pack:
Bring personal cleansing products such as towels, toothpaste, sponges, bathing soap etc.
