Karim F Hirji was born on 15 June 1949 in Newala, Mtwara Region. He earned degrees B.Sc. (1971, First Class, Mathematics, Education, University of Dar es Salaam); M.Sc. (1972, Operations Research, London School of Economics); S.M. and Sc.D. (1982 and 1986, Biostatistics, Harvard School of Public Health). He has held fulltime positions at the University of Dar es Salaam; National Institute of Transport, Tanzania; University of California at Los Angeles; and the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, and attained the rank of Professor of Biostatistics. He has also taught short courses at UCLA, University of Oslo and University of Bergen. He was elected as Fellow of the Tanzania Academy of Sciences in July 2012.
He has published three books, 3 book chapters; over 70 research papers in statistics, health, and education; and over 30 general articles, book reviews and poems. Presented the George W. Snedecor Award for Best Publication in Biometry in 1989, he is a recognized expert in the field of analysis of small sample data. Currently he writes books, papers and commentaries on the ethics of health research, medical statistics, education and memoirs, and teaches short courses.
