CARTA is a consortium that brings together 9 African universities, 4 African research centres and selected northern partners to build African research capacity in public and population health. There are various ways in which this programme brings together partners in a mutually beneficial way. In this paper we will describe the nature of the relationships that have developed within CARTA including: the board of management, its structure and purpose and the representation of northern and southern partners and how this was decided; CARTA’s “Partner’s Forum”, its role and structure; the curriculum development workshops, how they have been run and the role of northern and southern partners; the delivery of CARTA’s Joint Advanced Seminar and how the composition of the teaching faculty has changed over time. We will conclude with observations about south –north relations and leadership of consortia drawing on the CARTA experience.
Donald Comment - an important paper for the growing literature on partnership, the challenges of cooperation in the face of competition, the way power can shift with locus of leadership and funding with the CARTA model. I would love to be part of it, as a northern partner, involved in implementation.
Further, this needs to be linked with item iv. row in table:
South-South versus South-North collaboration in research training. This would be an analysis of the experiences from different CARTA partners
Research capacity building for health in SSA: South-South versus North-South collaboration
Reflective stuff
Needs data collection e.g. masters' interviews of focal persons and leadership
Draw on existing reviews (Horton et al), Christina Zarowsky (University Western Cape) and Donald´s PhD student on partnership
CARTA leadership, Board, partner leads
Finally, Frances said she commented on this, but I didn't see her comment or how to comment on this page without editing it.
