JAS 2 Cohort 3 will be held from November 18 - December 12, 2012 at the School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the upcoming CARTA Supervisors’ Workshop at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 25–27, 2013.
Visas
Participants may have been required to obtain visas to enter South Africa. Please retain your receipt for reimbursement.
Yellow fever
Please confirm the status of your yellow fever vaccination before you travel. It is advisable that you have your vaccination done at least 2 weeks before you travel-please ensure that you carry your vaccination card with you. There will be no reimbursement for any fees paid for vaccinations.
Arrival in Johannesburg
On arrival at the O. R. Tambo International Airport, you will be met by a driver from Boyang Gape Tours and Travel who will take you to your accommodation (look out for a board with your name on it as you leave the baggage claim area).
Accommodation and meals
Your accommodation has been reserved at the Sunnyside Park Hotel (No 2 York Road, Corner Princess of Wales Terrace and St Andrews Road, Parktown, Johannesburg; Tel: +277 11 640 0400; http://www.thesunnyside.co.za/)
For the duration of the meeting, CARTA will cover the costs of your accommodation and breakfast. Lunch will be provided at the meeting. A modest per diem of USD 100 will be provided to cover your dinner and any incidentals. You will be responsible for any other bills you incur e.g. telephone calls, laundry, bar, etc. These will need to be settled at the time you are checking out.
Local currency
Please note that the only currency accepted for purchases in South Africa is the South African rand. You may therefore wish to purchase rand before you arrive or at the airport in Johannesburg. Alternatively, you may settle your bill at the hotel with a credit card.
Meeting rooms
The workshop will take place in the School of Public Health at Wits. This is a short walk from your accommodation. Prof. Goran Bondjers will meet you in the lobby of the Sunnyside Park Hotel at 12.30h on November 25 and take you the School where lunch will be served prior to the start of the meeting.
Please bring an electrical adaptor-South Africa has very unusual electrical outlets and you will likely require an adaptor to allow you to plug in your computer etc. These can also be purchased from the airport. You will be responsible for the cost.
Social events
There will be a dinner for supervisors and their students on November 25, 2013 at the Origins Centre. Transportation will be provided to and from the venue.
On November 26, 2013, there will also be a Prestigious Lecture, hosted by the Wits Faculty of Health Sciences, entitled ““Antibody based HIV Vaccines - are we any closer?” It will be delivered by Prof. Maria Papathanasopoulos and Dr. Penny Moore in the School of Public Health Auditorium at 17.30h.
Weather
It is currently summer in Johannesburg with average temperatures of 15-26°C. Please bring an umbrella-there are frequent afternoon showers.
