Japhet Biegon is the Director of Research at the Kenya Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission of Kenya. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a member of the Kenya National Committee on the Prevention of Atrocity Crimes. In 2009, he served as a member of INTERIGHTS International Legal Research Panel. He has participated actively in the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, including in formulating guidelines for state reporting under the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACPHR) on the Rights of Women.
He has served as a lead researcher and author in a project that aided the South African Government to prepare its state party reports under regional and international human rights treaties. He has published widely in the field of international human rights law and international criminal and humanitarian law. In this regard, he is the co-editor of two seminal books: ‘Prosecuting International Crimes in Africa’, published by Pretoria University Law Press, and ‘Judicial enforcement of socio-economic rights under the new Constitution: Challenges and opportunities’, published by ICJ-Kenya. Most recently, he was involved in the training of Kenyan judges on socio-economic rights under the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.
