Beth Maina Ahlberg a holder of PhD in sociology is currently a Professor of International Health at the Unit of International Maternal and Child Health, Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Faculty of Medicine, Uppsala University. She is also head of research at the Skaraborg Institute for Research and Development, a local research foundation whose main responsibility is to promote research capacity within health care in Skaraborg County in West Gotaland. As head of research a main task is building an infrastructure for inter-disciplinary research, find flexible ways of involving health practitioners in research and organising education relevant for practice that may not be available in universities.
Her research interests are in the area of sexual and reproductive health with special emphasis on HIV and AIDS, gender and health, migration and health also focusing on methodological issues including application of participatory and dialogic approaches to research and development. She has many years of research experience and collaboration with researchers in eastern and southern Africa, Sweden and other countries in Europe. She has also been involved in organising courses and teaching qualitative research methods, sociology of health, sexual and reproductive health, health in African contexts and health and development. She has supervised many students at Masters and PhD levels and has published. She has been involved in numerous international consultancies.
She is a founder member of the Network of African Women Scientists (NAWES) based in Sweden.
