Course Description: 

This is the first year of a two-year program that prepares eleventh graders to take the International Baccalaureate Language A: Literature Examination at either the Standard or the Higher Level. Studies in language and literature are built on the notion of conceptual learning, which enables students to engage with central concepts of the discipline and become flexible, critical readers of all types of texts.

The Language A: Literature course is divided into 3 Areas of Exploration: “Readers, Writers and Texts”, “Time and Space”, and “Intertextuality-Connecting Texts”. Within each Area of Exploration, 7 Concepts and 5 Global Issues are integrated in the literary works taught. Overlap between the Areas, the Concepts and the Global Issues is expected and is highly encouraged by the IB.  

The organization of the course facilitates the cross-referential and intertextual study of the prescribed literary texts in relation to Concepts, Global Issues, and Areas of Exploration. Adopting a variety of theoretical perspectives, students will explore the dynamic interaction between content and aesthetic form as well as between literary text and cultural context. In the process, they will develop advanced critical thinking, academic writing, and research skills. 

As we study a wide range of texts, we are likely to consider many critical questions that relate to the nature of knowledge, certainty, belief and truth. Such questions are relevant to the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), which is a core requirement for any IB student.

The assessments are aligned with the IBO assessment criteria. Predictions are based on Paper 1 and/ or Paper 2 tests, mock examination and oral presentations.
