Course description

The Perspectives in Literature curriculum will use a variety of texts from multiple regions and perspectives of the world. These texts will vary in length, subject matter, and themes but will be connected by the theme of identity and self. The course uses authors offering different perspectives based on region, gender, and race to address the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Of considerable importance are the abilities for the student reader to confront and understand unfamiliar perspectives, independently research unknown or confusing materials, and draw inferences and/or make connections from a culture perhaps different than their own. 

In addition to challenging reading, students will be required to continue to develop their writing skills. Using a variety of writing prompts and assignments, students will be challenged to think critically about texts and ideas but also communicate their opinions effectively through writing and speaking. Students will continue to hone their voice in writing while practicing thesis creation, essay organization, and mechanically sound writing. Oral presentations will be used throughout the course to strengthen student speaking and listening skills. 

Students will also strengthen their research and citation abilities as they research the authors, cultures, philosophies, politics, literary movements, and subjects present in the diverse texts using a variety of sources. 

The goal of this class is for students to understand the works in cultural/historical contexts and their connections to those things that make us human.
