Description:

This is intended for students who wish to pursue studies in mathematics at university or subjects that have a large mathematical content; it is for students who enjoy developing mathematical arguments, problem solving and exploring real and abstract applications, with and without technology and have strong algebraic skills. This course is suitable for students wishing to study Mathematics, Physics and most forms of Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Aeronautical) at University.

The IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL course is a rigorous, fast-paced IB course that focuses on providing students with analytical skills and a deeper understanding of Mathematics. Emphasis is placed in constructing, communicating and justifying mathematical arguments. This course includes topics such as Number and Algebra, Functions, Geometry and Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability, and Calculus. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to apply mathematical knowledge to solve abstract problems and problems set in different meaningful contexts. Students will develop mathematical insight and an appreciation for the connections between concepts in different areas.

All the topics listed above for SL are also covered at HL; additional topics include combinatorics, complex numbers, induction, systems of equations in three unknowns, partial fractions, rational functions, vectors, Bayes’ theorem, limits, continuity, differentiability, l’ Hôpital’s rule, volumes, separable, homogeneous and linear differential equations, Euler’s method and McLaurin series.

Note: This is the second course in a two-year sequence.

A Graphic Display calculator is required. CASIO CG series graphic display calculator will be used for class instruction and demonstration. Please check with the school before buying a graphing
