Hello everyone,
It has been a lively week here at ACMS with three evenings away from school and five performances on the menu. The run-up to our final Christmas week has been full and festive. Here is a look at what has been happening.
Congratulations to all pupils involved in the Beach Ballroom rehearsals and concerts this week. These annual Christmas events, hosted by Aberdeen City Music Service, are a highlight for Aberdeen city and we are delighted to take part each year.
This week brought an unexpected challenge, with illness making our original programme choice impossible. By Monday evening it was clear that our planned set could not go ahead due to missing key players. What happened next was a touching display of ACMS spirit and positivity: pupils picked up repertoire from earlier in the year, revised their parts independently, worked together calmly, and delivered a performance on Tuesday evening that would make any musical establishment proud. Their professionalism, resilience, and musicianship shone through...AND...also quietly confirmed that Christmas repertoire introduced in our August rehearsals had been an excellent idea!
A big thank you to Miss Donati, Mrs Smith, Mr Maunder, Ms McClintoch, and Miss Arthur for their help staffing the trip.
Grade 6 Theory
Big congratulations to Kai G on a significant achievement. It has been a long time since ACMS has entered pupils for higher-level ABRSM theory exams. Kai is the first of a strong cohort of pupils working towards advanced theory, and he has approached his studies with exceptional commitment. His work marks an important moment in the school’s developing theoretical culture. Many thanks to Mrs Kyle for her dedicated teaching and guidance. Deep theoretical understanding gives musicians substantial agency in their own learning, creativity, and collaboration, and it is inspiring to see this renewed focus taking root.
Braemar
A group of our musicians will head to Braemar tomorrow to perform in their Christmas concert. ACMS has a warm relationship with Braemar thanks to their hospitality during our ACMS tour in 2024, when we performed seven concerts in two days. It is a pleasure to maintain this connection, and we look forward to supporting their festive celebrations.
Night Off
Our pupils enjoyed a well-earned evening off last night. It offered a chance to catch breath and recharge before the final stretch of term.
Nine Lessons and Carols
We send all best wishes to the Choir of St Andrew’s Cathedral, including our current and former pupils taking part in this beautiful service. Nine Lessons and Carols is a staple of many musical calendars. If you are free on Sunday at 6.30 pm, it is well worth attending. The music is glorious, the atmosphere is special, and it is a lovely way to begin the final days before Christmas.
Dyce Academy Christmas Concert
Thank you to all pupils who joined the Dyce Academy Music Department to present their Christmas concert last night. Even on what was technically a night off, several ACMS pupils volunteered to take part. Their enthusiasm is impressive.
Thank you to Mrs Kirkwood and Mrs Dawson for organising such a brilliant concert, and also to the many other members of the Dyce Academy Staff who helped to ensure the concert ran smoothly!
Midnight Mass at St Andrew’s Cathedral
The Provost, Isaac, has extended an open invitation to anyone who would like to sing at Midnight Mass. If you are interested, please let me know and I will pass your details on.

Aberdeen City Orchestra Youth Ensemble
Congratulations to our pupils who were involved in this concert last Friday night: Douglas, Freyja, Isabelle, Sophia, and Alaina.
They performed Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C major, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, and Ruth Gipps’s Ambarvalia Op. 70. The concert was a great success, played to a packed audience. A special mention goes to Freyja, who delivered an excellent solo in the Gipps, earning warm praise from audience and colleagues alike.
Entries are still open! The deadline for submissions is Friday 16 January, with the heats taking place on 10 February 2026. Do encourage your young musicians to take part.
