The snow has made this week both challenging and memorable! A huge thank you to the pupils, parents, boarding staff, ACMS staff, and tutors for their adaptability and commitment. Despite the weather, we managed to keep things running as smoothly as possible. Several lessons transitioned online, and we made significant timetable adjustments to accommodate everyone’s needs.
I am constantly amazed by the dedication of our community and deeply grateful to everyone for their support this week.
Our Specialist Weekend 4 begins today. A colour theme has not yet been determined by the pupils, but hopefully they will reach a consensus about Sunday in today's session.
Specialist Weekend 4
• Friday, 22nd November: 2:45 pm–5:15 pm
• Sunday, 24th November: 10:30 am–5:15 pm
We were disappointed but completely understanding when the snow forced the cancellation of this event. The concert, a highlight of our collaborative biannual schedule, brings music to the local lunch club. We look forward to rescheduling and performing for them soon.
Thank you to the pupils signed up to perform at Newmachar Primary’s concert on Tuesday, 26th November.
What a treat we had yesterday! At His Majesty’s Theatre, we were warmly welcomed by a member of the outreach team who gave us a synopsis of Don Pasquale, introduced us to the orchestra, and provided insights into the evening’s cast.
The performance was spectacular—a full operatic orchestra and a top-tier cast delivering a truly unforgettable experience. After the show, we were honoured to meet David Stout (who played Don Pasquale) and Susannah Wapshott (the conductor and chorusmaster), who kindly answered questions and posed for photos.
It was a magical evening for our pupils.
Thanks to your generosity, our pencil container is looking healthy again! We’re now well-equipped to jot down all our performance and rehearsal directions.
Our Strings Come and Play Day was the first event to be impacted by the snow. Unfortunately, about ten of our guests from rural areas were unable to attend. However, we were thrilled to welcome participants from as far as Elgin and Fraserburgh!
In total, 15 string players joined us for a wonderful session led by Mr Maunder. His workshop explored the difference between simply playing an instrument and delving into the finer details of high-level music-making. The pupils were fully engaged throughout, and the day concluded with a concert-style workshop for parents.
We even opened the warm rehearsal space to parents who arrived early in the snowy conditions—what a cosy atmosphere! A big thank you to the ACMS pupils who participated and warmly encouraged our guests.
Given the weather disruptions, we’re planning an additional session next Thursday as part of an open rehearsal.
The snow hit us hardest on Wednesday, affecting our Singers Come and Sing Day. Despite the challenges, one guest braved the elements to join 15 of our own ACMS singers for a workshop, and we made sure she had a fabulous time!
We were fortunate to have guest conductor Morven Lind from the Aberdeen City Music Service, who led a session that began with vocal warm-ups and a fascinating talk about the human voice as an instrument. The workshop concluded with a rousing rehearsal of a medley from A Muppet Christmas Carol, performed at the end of the evening.
A huge thanks to Morven for her inspiring leadership, Dr Milne for her fantastic talk on the human voice, and Mrs Kyle for accompanying.
Have you noticed how clean and fabulous the ACMS sign at the roundabout looks? A big thank you to the Boarding team for arranging its cleaning - it’s such a welcoming sight!
Our S2 pupils will perform in the Recital at Noon series at St Andrew’s Cathedral on Saturday, 23rd November. Admission is free, and refreshments follow the 30-minute concert. If you’re in town, why not stop by for a cultural break?
We’ve added a page to the ACMS Online Bulletin Board listing trusted instrument repairers and specialists. If you know of someone excellent, please email their details so we can include them. This will be a valuable resource for our community.
The Scottish Young Musician Solo Performer of the Year heats are fast approaching! Application forms are available via the Online Bulletin Board. Don’t miss the deadline—submit your entries soon.
Tickets for our March Concert are now available through the Aberdeen Music Hall. Book early to secure your seats!
A reminder that S4 pupils involved in exams should attend full rehearsals on Mondays until 8 pm and maintain their individual lessons and ensembles. For timetable clashes or specific issues, please speak with Mr Donati or your ensemble director to make arrangements.
