Dear All,
It is an exciting week for us here at ACMS. A tremendous amount of work has gone into tomorrow’s concert from both pupils and staff. Thank you to everyone who has played a role in preparing our young musicians for this performance, and a very warm thank you as well to the wider community who continually encourage our pupils and staff, have obtained tickets, and will be joining us to support the concert.
Putting on a performance of this scale is no small undertaking. The concert is entirely pupil-led, performed for a public audience, and our young musicians experience the real pressures and rewards that come with presenting their work to a large and knowledgeable audience. The preparation, concentration, and emotional energy required to perform at this level are considerable, and we are enormously proud of the commitment our pupils have shown in the lead-up to the event. Thank you to everyone for your support, goodwill, and kind encouragement.
The dress rehearsal is always a special milestone in the lead-up to a major performance. By this point the notes are learned and the memorised sections complete, and the rehearsal becomes less about individual preparation and more about understanding how each performer fits within the wider musical picture.
A large part of the rehearsal focuses on logistics: timing, stage movement, listening to others, and understanding how one’s own role contributes to the overall musical vision. It is also often the first moment when performers begin to feel the real nerves of performance. The stage lights are on, peers and staff are watching, and the atmosphere begins to resemble the concert itself.
There was a wonderful buzz in the air as rehearsals began on Monday afternoon, and the entire session went extremely well. Pupils brought not only excellent preparation but also a strong sense of working for the group. It was a genuine pleasure to hear the encouragement and support they gave one another throughout the rehearsal.
It was also lovely to welcome back our bursary cohort, who joined us for the final section of the programme before sitting in on the feedback session and then joining the ensemble again for a final run of the finale.
By the end of the rehearsal, every pupil left with a clear understanding of what they needed to do both musically and logistically, and with a strong appreciation of how their contribution supports the performances of others.
The high quality of the rehearsal was entirely down to the pupils themselves and the energy and focus they brought to the evening. All the staff involved in organising this concert are immensely grateful to them.
The March Concert is finally here!
We are hugely excited to spend the day tomorrow in the wonderful surroundings of Aberdeen Music Hall, rehearsing and performing this year’s programme. It is always a special moment for our pupils to perform in this world-class venue.
We look forward to welcoming many of you in the audience and cannot wait to share the music we have been working on over the past weeks and months.
A couple of practical reminders:
• Pupils will remain backstage during the interval and will not be meeting parents at that point.
• After the performance, all pupils will help pack the van before signing out with a member of staff.
Packing the instruments and equipment is a very quick process when the whole school helps, and we are grateful to parents for waiting a few minutes at the end while this is completed. Being part of the team effort before and after concerts is an important aspect of learning how large musical groups operate, and we are grateful for everyone’s support in maintaining this tradition.
As is a long-standing ACMS tradition following the March Concert, the school will close at 5.00 pm on Monday. This allows pupils and staff a moment to catch their breath after such a busy period of rehearsals and performances,

Beach Ballroom
Congratulations to the whole of ACMS following a fantastic performance earlier this week.
Our pupils were delighted to be invited by Aberdeen City Music Service to perform at one of their end-of-term concerts at the beautiful Beach Ballroom.
The set opened in style with our brilliant ACMS pipers performing a lively trio arrangement of Steam Train to Mallaig. We then presented a wonderfully bold performance of Where Is My Husband? by RAYE, complete with vocal harmonies, orchestral accompaniment, epic percussion, accordion, and the unmistakable sound of the bagpipes.
A huge thank you to all the staff and pupils who made this such an enjoyable visit, and our sincere thanks to Aberdeen City Music Service for their warm welcome.
Jazz at the Cowdray
All the very best of luck to two of our recent alumni: Adam Taylor (drums) and Calum Airzee (guitar), who will be performing this Sunday 15 March at the Cowdray Hall as part of the Aberdeen Jazz Festival.
They will be joined by their NESCol colleagues Aedan Duncan (guitar), Nico Sherlock (keys), and Cameron McDonald (bass). The group will perform a programme featuring Japanese jazz fusion, 1970s funk, and a selection of jazz standards.
Their set runs from 15:15–15:45.
Tickets:
General £14 | Student £8 | Child (5–16) £5
We wish them every success; please go along to support them if you are free.
Out of Hours Shout-out
We are delighted that so many ACMS pupils have been taking part in the Inverness Festival, which continues this weekend.
One of our pipers, Kai also enjoyed an exciting weekend of playing at the Stirling Junior Piping Competition at the King Robert Hotel where he entered and performed well in numerous classes. Well done, Kai!
Heather had a great weekend too working with the Edinburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra at Geaorge Watson's College in Edinburgh. They are working towards a concert on 7th and 8th August at Greyfriars Curch in Edinburgh.
We are always grateful to pupils and families who send us photographs and info from these events. It is wonderful to see our young musicians gaining valuable experience through these external performances and projects, and we love sharing them with you.
Good luck to all our pupils who are still to perform this weekend We wish you every success.
Finally, thank you as always for the extraordinary encouragement you give to the pupils and staff of Aberdeen City Music School. The success of our young musicians depends not only on the work that takes place in practice rooms and rehearsal spaces, but also on the warmth of the community that surrounds them. We look forward to sharing another exciting evening of music with you tomorrow.
