🎶 ACMS Weekly Newsletter
Dear All,
I hope you’ve had a wonderful week. It’s been an exceptionally busy seven days for us, and with another seven to go, the tempo isn’t slowing down yet!
Specialist Weekend Session 1 - We began in festive style (yes, in September!) with the first run-throughs of our Christmas repertoire. It may feel early, but once the mince pies arrive, we’ll be more than ready.
Saturday - A Whirlwind of Performances
      •     Union Square - Our ACMS Jazz Quartet brightened the morning with a stylish set of jazz standards.
      •     St Andrew’s Cathedral - Bravo to Petra and alumna Chloe for two beautiful lunchtime recitals, with thanks to Mrs Kyle for her accompaniment.
      •     Cowdray Hall - Congratulations to Willow and James for their lunchtime solo performances.
      •     NESMS Masterclass - Several of our singers enjoyed watching a masterclass and Q&A with the legendary Pat MacMahon - an inspiring occasion.
      •     Union Square (afternoon) - Alumni Adam and Kian returned with an outstanding jazz set. Wonderful to hear them again!
      •     Cowdray Hall (afternoon) - Our second concert of the day featured Grieg, Beethoven, Monti, Ireland, and Gilbert & Sullivan, all greeted with huge enthusiasm from the audience.
🌟 A huge thank you to our staff, parents, and the teams at Cowdray Hall and Union Square for their hard work behind the scenes, making the day run smoothly and cheerfully. Bravi tutti!
Sunday - Open Morning
Thank you to our pupils for turning up bright and early on a Sunday (never an easy task!) and giving such polished performances. The morning featured:
      •     Five short musical interludes,
      •     Talks from me and Katie Arthur (Head Teacher of Dyce Academy),
      •     Tours led by our pupils,
      •     Coffee and biscuits with parents kindly serving and chatting.
Special thanks to Ms Donati and Mrs Smith for steering the behind-the-scenes arrangements - everything ran like clockwork.
Specialist Weekend (Session 2) – Hard Work, Great Focus
Despite a packed schedule, pupils threw themselves into rehearsals for Christmas music, the Blue Lamp concert, and our March concert. The senior pupils' leadership and energy were especially inspiring.
🎲 Boarding Bingo
Thanks to the boarding staff for organising a fun-filled bingo night after our early close on Monday. A great way to unwind!
Evensong at St Andrew’s Cathedral
One of our vocalists joined the Cathedral Choir for Evensong, guest conducted by Roger Williams, with Stanford in B-flat and one of Roger’s own works on the programme. Our growing partnership with the Cathedral Choir is a joy.
🎻 Woodwind, Strings & Brass Come & Play Day
✨ Huge congratulations to everyone who joined our Orchestral Come & Play event!
• Brilliant sectionals with Mr Maunder (and invaluable support from ACMS pupils).
• A clarinet treat from Mr Gault.
• A rousing finale of Purcell’s Abdelazar.
That brings our 2025 Come & Play Days to a close - thank you to all who have supported these wonderful community events.

On Tuesday at 6:30pm in the MPA, Dyce Academy is hosting a concert to support their “Sponsor a Piano Key” fundraiser. The campaign is going brilliantly under Mrs Kirkwood’s direction. The evening will feature pianists from Dyce Academy and ACMS - do come along! Free entry, donations welcome.
Music College ApplicationsÂ
Well done to all pupils who submitted applications by this week's deadline. Draft after draft of personal statements paid off - best of luck!
Sitzprobe Experience
Through personal connections, Douglas attended a Scottish Opera Sitzprobe rehearsal. These closed rehearsals are a rare treat, and he had a fantastic time watching orchestra, soloists, and chorus come together for the first time.
đź› Instrument Repairs
A reminder that our online bulletin board has a list of local instrument repairers. These are not formal recommendations, but a handy first stop. Always check with your teacher before booking repairs.
Fiona Kennedy with Friends - Tivoli Theatre, Fri 3 October, 7.30pm
A lovely Friday-night treat in the heart of Aberdeen! Fiona Kennedy is joined by a stellar line-up: Paul Anderson, Neil Birse, Nils Elders, Frank Thomson, Irene Watt, and the Devron & Mearns Singers for an evening of Scottish song, traditional tunes, and good cheer at the Tivoli Theatre.
It promises to be a warm, uplifting concert: perfect inspiration for young musicians too.Â
🎶 National Youth Choir of Scotland - Auditions Now Open! 🎶
The National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCOS) is holding auditions soon, and it’s a brilliant opportunity for young singers to develop their voices, work with inspiring conductors, and perform with talented peers from across the country.

🎠A Special Treat at His Majesty’s Theatre
We were very grateful to receive a generous donation of two tickets for the Scottish Ballet production of Mary, Queen of Scots, currently performing at His Majesty’s Theatre.
Congratulations to Eva, who was the lucky winner of our draw and will be enjoying this wonderful production!
🎶 Springfield Seniors’ Club Performance
Congratulations to our eight pupils who performed for the Springfield Seniors’ Club this week. We received some lovely feedback from the organisers, who praised ACMS not only for the pupils’ musical ability, but also for their stage presence, confidence, and general demeanour.
One particularly lovely comment said the audience “left full of admiration and felt they’d had a fabulous afternoon”... and we’re already delighted to have been invited back next year!
A big thank you to Mrs Smith and Miss Donati for running the trip, and to Mrs Kyle for her wonderful accompanying.
