Welcome to this week's edition of the The Shout in a new experimental format.
As usual, ACMS has had a busy and exciting week. Here's a look at what we've been doing!
Thank you to all pupils, staff, and families for making our ACMS return to The Blue Lamp such a fantastic evening on Monday night. Our jazz pupils led the music brilliantly, and it was a joy to see so many performers trying their hand at jazz repertoire. A special thank you to the venue for hosting us, to Jack, the sound technician, who was fantastic all night, and to Mr Birse for overseeing the rehearsals. It was also wonderful to see the Boarding staff come along to support.
We hope this marks the beginning of a new era of regular collaboration between ACMS and The Blue Lamp Jazz Club.
ACMS has been invited back to take part in the regional heats for the annual Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer of the Year Competition.
I am still waiting for final confirmation, but the details and dates are likely to be as follows:
The deadline for entries will be c. Thursday 12th December. The senior heats (S4 to S6) will be held at Aberdeen Grammar School in evenings mid-January and the junior heats (up to S3) will be held during the daytime during the February INSET week.
I will update with details as soon as I have them.
A number of pupils will be attending the opera at His Majesty's theatre on Thursday next week.
Our visiting guests and our Trad Group had a wonderful time at our Scottish Traditional Instruments Come and Play Day. It was heartwarming to see our experienced pupils supporting our young guests with their music and helping them to integrate socially into the group.
A big thank you to Mr Bone for running the session and to his fantastic assistant, Mr Maunder.
Congratulations to our pipers on a fantastic Bagpipes Come and Play Day. The workshop was a great opportunity for our pipers to experience taking rehearsals and gain some valuable teaching experience. Thank you to Mr Buchan for organising such a wonderful event!
Please note that the closing date for entries for this festival/competition is Friday 20th December. Link HERE
The ACMS March Concert takes place on Friday 21st March 2025 at the Aberdeen Music Hall. Early booking for parents is available HERE
The Come and Play Strings Day takes place on Tuesday 19th Nov and the Come and Sing Day is on Weds 20th Nov. If you know anyone who may be interested, the link is HERE
When you drive past Boarding, you will now see how fabulously clean the grassy hill looks. Thank you to our six volunteers who gave up their afternoon break yesterday to make our world a little better. Thank you also to Margaret and Yvonne for organising the litter picking equipment.
Please note that for next week, the basketball activity on Tuesday evening will be open only to boarders.
Please remember that the ACMS uniform includes a long skirt or trousers NOT shorts or short skirts. Make ensure that correct uniform is always worn at future concerts.
Congratulations to Freyja, who had a fantastic experience working with the BBC Symphony Orchestra last weekend at Maida Vale Studios. Freyja took part in the world premiere recording of a new piece by Judith Weir, entitled Music, Spread Thy Voice.
In addition to the premiere recording, Freyja enjoyed participating in a creative workshop with the professional musicians of the orchestra - a memorable opportunity!
As ACMS regularly performs concerts with large groups, we have realised that we lack portable fold-up music stands. Although we have plenty of high-quality large stands, they are not easily portable. If you have any spare fold-up stands lying around, perhaps in an attic, please consider donating them to ACMS. These portable stands would be greatly appreciated for our concert days!
Our pencil supply is running low! We’re thrilled that pencils have become such an integral part of rehearsals and lessons, but they’re disappearing fast. Pupils, if you have pencils lying around in your instrument cases, please return some to the box. Parents, if you happen to have a surplus of pencils at home, please consider donating a few to ACMS. Let’s keep up our good habit of recording teaching and rehearsal advice!
I received an email from a friend of ACMS who is looking to sell a double bass. Please see below if you know anyone who might be interested.
“I’m hoping you can help me—I am looking to sell my ¾ size double bass (including soft case, two French bows, pick-up, bow quiver, and mute) but am unsure where to start. Could you suggest any local ways to advertise, or might you know of any students wanting to move up to a ¾ size double bass?
This bass was originally bought for me to learn on in the early 1990s and has been in my possession ever since. It has been played in symphonic orchestras, string orchestras, concert bands, and jazz ensembles (hence the pick-up). It’s a great student bass for learning and developing technique.”
Tickets for the concert with the Aberdeen City Music Service will be available online from 9 am on 21st November via the Beach Ballroom website.
Please remember to check the website for information about bursaries, awards, grants, and other musical opportunities. There are fantastic resources available for young musicians in terms of experience and funding. Contact Mrs Smith for more details. Further information can also be found on the ACMS Online Bulletin Board.
