Dear All,
It has been a pleasure to welcome everyone back after our non-teaching week. There is something rather satisfying about returning to routine, especially when that routine involves preparing for the March Concert, which is now only three weeks away. Rehearsals are in full swing, energy levels are high, and alongside all of that we have somehow managed to fit in several performances too. Here is a glimpse of the week behind, and the week ahead.
On Tuesday evening our vocal pupils presented an engaging recital of French mélodie and Italian song.
As you may remember, our original French recital was postponed in November, so this week’s concert became a combined celebration of both traditions. The singers were in excellent voice, but what stood out equally was their confidence in speaking to the audience. Each performer introduced their repertoire, explained the context and offered translations with clarity and charm.
Watching pupils develop not only as performers but as communicators is deeply rewarding. A particular thank you to our excellent student accompanists for their careful preparation, and to Mrs Kyle for her sensitive playing on the evening.
Our visits to Parkhill Court Residential Home are a treasured part of our annual calendar. Usually we bring a small group of performers. This time we brought almost the entire school!
It was a pleasure to share several of our larger ensemble items with the residents. The warmth in the room was unmistakable and the feedback afterwards has been overwhelming. Beyond the musical standard, which was excellent, we were particularly proud of how our pupils communicated. They connected, spoke, listened and brought genuine presence to the performance. Music at its best builds bridges, and this was a beautiful example of that.
Specialist Weekend 7
Our final Specialist Weekend before the March Concert begins today at 2.45 pm and runs until 5.15 pm.
Sunday’s session is from 10.30 am to 5.15 pm.
The pupils have chosen “Scotland” as Sunday’s dress-up theme. Given past efforts, I anticipate something spectacular. Creativity at ACMS is rarely understated.
Early Closing on Monday
A gentle reminder that, as is customary following our Specialist Weekend, we will close at 7.00 pm on Monday evening. Thank you for your understanding as staff and pupils catch their breath before the next busy stretch.
Recital at Noon
We look forward to our next Recital at Noon at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Aberdeen, tomorrow, Saturday 21 February.
Entry is free and family and friends are warmly invited. These recitals are a special opportunity for our pupils to perform in a beautiful and historic setting, and for our wider community to hear the breadth of music on offer at ACMS.
NESPA 2026
The North East of Scotland Performing Arts (NESPA) Festival remains a highlight of the year. It offers solo and ensemble classes, valuable adjudication, and the opportunity to perform in a professional setting alongside like-minded young musicians from across the region.
The 2026 syllabus is now available, with entries opening soon. I strongly encourage pupils and parents to look through the classes together. If you are unsure which category might suit you, please speak to your teacher for guidance. It is a supportive, positive environment and an excellent stepping stone in any young performer’s journey.
It has been a full week with an even fuller weekend ahead. Thank you, as ever, to our pupils for their dedication and to our parents for the indefatigable support that makes all of this possible.
I hope you find a little space for rest amidst the rehearsals.
