Dear All,
Just to let you in on a little secret, I usually spend the week drafting and refining the newsletter so it’s ready to send out on a Friday. However, after yet another couple of challenging weather-related days, I’m completely rewriting the draft. Here’s what’s been happening at ACMS this week.
Heating in Boarding
As many of you know, the main heating system in the boarding house failed on Wednesday due to a broken pump. Thanks to Jackie’s swift and determined efforts, a replacement pump was sourced, delivered, and installed by Thursday afternoon, with heating restored by the evening. A huge thank you to Jackie and her team for some exceptional work and to staff and parents for their patience and understanding during this chilly ordeal.
Weather Warning
With Dyce Academy and ACMS closed today due to adverse weather conditions, we’ve been working hard to ensure all arrangements run smoothly. A number of boarding pupils who need to travel home have done so safely, with others being picked up by parents later today. A huge thanks to the efforts of the Boarding team and the wonderful support from parents. A special thank you to Katie Arthur and the Dyce Academy Team for their help in coordinating communications and ensuring everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Estimates (Academic Exams)
Good luck to our S4–S6 pupils who have been sitting exams this week and will continue into next week. Thank you to our staff and tutors for accommodating room changes during this busy period—it’s greatly appreciated.
March Concert Tickets
Don’t forget to book your tickets for our March concert through the Music Hall website. We’re already about three-quarters sold, so please book now to avoid disappointment.
Open Morning
We’re excited to host our Open Morning on Sunday, 2nd February. If you know anyone who might be interested, please encourage them to come along. Further details and registration can be found HERE.
Technical Exams
Well done to our S1–S3 pupils who completed their technical assessments this week. Their preparation and engagement were outstanding, and the feedback sessions highlighted some fantastic development opportunities. These assessments have been audio recorded and sent to tutors for review.
SYM
Congratulations to all our pupils who participated in the Scottish Young Musicians Aberdeen City heats this week. Many of us had the pleasure of hearing their wonderful performances during informal concerts leading up to the event. A big thank you to parents who helped with transport—it’s a privilege to collaborate with the Aberdeen City Music Service on this competition.
Burns Performances Cancelled
Due to the worsening weather, we regretfully had to withdraw from several scheduled Burns Night performances, including events at St Peter’s RC Primary School, St John’s Church, and the Caithness, Shetland, and Orkney Society’s Burns Supper. We’re very grateful to the organisers for their understanding and look forward to rescheduling future performances.
Agar Trust and Other Opportunities
Earlier this week, Mrs Smith sent out information about the Agar Trust and other bursary opportunities. These trusts provide valuable support for young musicians, such as funding for instruments, summer courses, college fees, and more. Please don’t hesitate to apply—you might be surprised by what’s available!
Specialist Weekend 6
Our next specialist weekend will take place on Friday, 31st January and Sunday, 2nd February. We hope to run through an early version of the March concert programme.
Piano Recital
Join us at noon on Sunday, 2nd February at St Andrew’s Cathedral for a short recital featuring some of our wonderful pianists.
Evensong
Some of our singers will also participate in Evensong at St Andrew’s Cathedral on Sunday, 2nd February at 5:30 pm. We’d love to see you there.
Thank You
A heartfelt thank you to all parents, pupils, ACMS staff, boarding staff, tutors, and Dyce Academy staff for your continued support.
Wishing you all a safe and warm weekend!
