Dear all,
Welcome back to another busy (and beautifully tuneful) week at Aberdeen City Music School. Our corridors are alive once again with practising, laughter, and the occasional burst of 'experimental' harmony as we dive into a packed programme of concerts, rehearsals, and creative chaos. From opera adventures and art-themed weekends to competitions, fashion shows, and college auditions, there’s certainly no shortage of music or mischief to keep us going as we head into November!
What a night to remember! 🎭
On Thursday evening, the entire school was treated to a wonderful performance of La Bohème by Scottish Opera at His Majesty’s Theatre. For many of our pupils, it was their very first experience of grand opera, and for almost everyone, their first encounter with the glorious music of Puccini.
The singing and acting were exceptional, the sets beautifully crafted, and the orchestra on superb form. It was an unforgettable evening of music and drama that left everyone inspired and uplifted.
We are deeply grateful to the Scottish Opera Outreach team for their generosity in hosting us, to Mrs Smith for her ongoing collaboration with Scottish Opera, and to Miss Donati for organising such a memorable trip.
A special highlight of the evening was when Roland Wood (Marcello) came out after the performance to meet our pupils and answer their questions...an inspiring moment!
It was a magical night that will stay with us for a long time. 🌟
🌞 Who Did What on Holiday?
A big bravi to Kai, Petra, Willow, James, and Freyja, all of whom spent their holidays immersed in music camps and creative adventures. It’s wonderful to see so many of our pupils continuing to make music, meet new friends, and represent ACMS so brilliantly...even when school’s out!
And... it’s wonderful to see our pupils' musical energy continuing wherever they go! All reports suggest that DJ Eddie was an outstanding DJ in Marrakesh - clearly spreading the ACMS spirit (and perhaps a few dance moves) far beyond Aberdeen! 🎧🌍
🎨 Specialist Weekend
Our Specialist Weekend begins this afternoon from 2.45 pm – 5.15 pm, continuing on Sunday from 10.30 am – 5.15 pm.
The Sunday theme this time is “Art”, and we’re expecting an explosion of colour, creativity, and questionable costume choices. Many pupils will even be arriving dressed as their favourite painting or artwork. We can’t wait to see which masterpieces walk through the door!
🕖 Early Closing
Just a quick reminder that, as usual, we close at 7.00 pm following a Specialist Weekend.
A huge thank you to our Boarding Team, who will be running an event for all boarders and day pupils that evening: the wonderfully titled “Alternative Fashion Show”. Pupils are encouraged to design and model their own creations using all manner of materials, old garments, scissors, glue, and a dash of imagination. Expect glamour, glitter, and possibly gaffer tape.
🎶 Conservatoire Auditions
Very best of luck to all our pupils auditioning for music college next week.
We’ve enjoyed some outstanding performances this week as our auditionees have bravely shared their recital pieces with friends, staff, and anyone else lucky enough to be passing through the hall. They’ll be travelling down early next week for their formal auditions before heading back north, and we wish them every success for a positive day, a confident performance, and a well-deserved celebration afterwards.
Thank you to all tutors, staff, and carers who have supported our pupils in reaching this exciting milestone.
Don't forget that the deadline for the Scottish Young Musicians senior heats is TODAY!! Apply HERE
🎤 Informal Concerts
It’s been a packed week of informal concerts!
We’ve had to bring our usual 7.45 pm start forward to 7.30 pm just to fit everyone in; a wonderful problem to have. It’s fantastic to see so many pupils keen to share works in progress, test ideas, and gain experience performing under gentle pressure in a friendly, supportive setting.
A special mention goes to Ruben, who joined ACMS only last week and has already performed in two informal concerts. That’s the spirit we love to see!
🏆 Competition Season
Competition season is upon us! Many local and national competitions have now released (or are about to release) their syllabuses for the coming year.
The benefits of taking part go far beyond prizes: performing in public, receiving professional adjudication, and meeting fellow musicians are all invaluable experiences.
We’re incredibly proud of our pupils who step out to perform beyond the school walls, and we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.

Halloween Fun in Boarding 🎃
A big thank you also goes to our Boarding team, who organised a fantastic series of Halloween events for our boarders. From spooky dress-up, and themed games to plenty of laughter and treats, they made sure everyone had a brilliant time celebrating together. 👻🕸️🧙♀️ It’s always lovely to see the Boarding House come alive with such energy and creativity: thank you for making it such a fun and memorable occasion!
📅 Coming Up
We’re looking forward to our Parents’ Committee Meeting on Tuesday evening at 6.30 pm in the Dyce Academy Library.
As always, everyone’s input is gratefully received.
Thanks, one and all for another great week.
See you in November.
