Names: Wild Chives (English); Allium schoenoprasum (Latin)

Other Common Names:

Habitat and Origin: Found in wet meadows or rocky stream banks or lake shores. Originates from Alberta and British Columbia all the way to Minnesota and New York.

Characteristics: Bulb forming, herbacious, prennial plant with hollow, tubular stems. Forms pale purple, six petal, flowers.

Edible Portion: Leaves

Optimal Growing Conditions: Grow best in well-drained, rich soil with full sun exposure.

Aboriginal Peoples Uses: Used for flavoring meats or vegetables and has been used to treat coughs and colds. Juice from plant has been used as an anticeptic and has been combined with sphagnum moss to dress wounds. Crush bulbs can be used to treat insect or snake bites and other hives or blisters.
