2012-07-12 Exploding Blooms

As some of our plants have started to bud and bloom, Dawn has found some exciting information about our bunchberry plants!!

The bunchberry plants are known to have ‘explosive’ flowering... basically the flowers pop open and bloom in under 0.4 ms, producing an exciting burst of pollen through the air! The website found by Dawn includes a few awesome videos of the process!

The benefits of this include wind pollination and improved insect pollination, by embedding the pollen deeper on the insect where it will not be lost or eaten.

Although our bunchberries are not budding or blooming yet, I’m looking forward to this! Hopefully I’m around to see it, or at least I can attempt to trigger it myself!
