Over the past week or so, I have had a few sightings of species that are identical/similar to those found in the garden!

First, I will let you know that I was ‘weeding’ our family herb garden at the beginning of the week and found this. I refused to pull it from the garden, since it looks identical to our Sticky Geraniums. So, I found this small pot and moved it there! We will see what comes of it, or if it even survives, but so far so good!

On top of that: I found some potentially indigenous plants growing on campus, right here beside the Education Building! Now, I have been watching these for a few weeks now, as I was really not sure if they were anything related to what we might have in the garden. But after visiting theSustain SU naturalization site on the main floor, I think I have found myself some sort of decorative Bergamot! It is not exactly the same as what we have in the gardens, especially considering the vivid purple and pink colors. But they must be related somehow!

So even though I don’t think I have found “Indigenous” plant species, they are related! It is very exciting to find that some ‘nearly Indigenous’ species are being planted purposefully on campus, it would be very interesting to see what else they have that could be considered a native plant species!

Have you seen any of our plant species in the wild? Or even somewhere in Edmonton? Let us know at gardens@educ.ualberta.ca!
