Tackling
Body @ Breakdown, 2 or 3 step Eyes on Belt, Hands roll knees to hips, wrap buttocks or fit, hips rise & drive.
Head up and to Direction of Ball across the T, Bite the Ball
Drive thru the receiver or running back with hips low, change direction of the runner
Duck & Gauntlet Drill – LB’s with shield in their hand, run thru inter-locked arms of teammates, pushing and driving low.
Drills
Stop and Start – Multiple LB’s start at 15 yards out, running forward and back under control and breakdown
Mirror Drill – LB’s Over and Between Half Bags – Lateral and Forward Movement (Follow RB’s back hip)
In & Out Drill – LB’s across and back using half bags, finish with a shield or full round tackle
Downhill Drill – LB’s progressively move downhill across half rounds, finish with a shield or full round LB tackle
3 Bag String Drill – LB’s move thru 3 shields at a downhill progression. First push & pull contact w/escape, Rip Escape, Post and Jump, finish with full round tackle.
Richochet Drill – LB moves back and forth between 3 shields, striking and releasing, finishes with full round tackle.
2 on 1 Drill – Use 2 extra players with shields and 1 RB, 2 to 3 step alternating contact teaching LB to strike a blow and release. LB to step down with short buzz steps to ball carrier.
Shed Tackle Drill – LB’s are 5 yards apart from Blocker, Blocker moves at 45 degree forward angle, teach LB’s to engage with hand(s) and forearm, releasing and moving at the proper angle to tackle.

Coverage & Catching Drills
Base Pass Drill – LB’s follow coaches motion and movement, LB’s movement side ways, @ 45 degree and drop. Emphasis on quality hip turn and hands (Coach finishes drill with ball tucked and all players sprinting forward to the ball)
Drag Drill – Using ½ field width, have 2 Wide receivers go out on predetermined patterns, Use TE as base Blocker (no drag) or have TE come across LB’s zone or face, LB’s communicate “Drag” call. Upon hearing the Drag call, the correct LB must come back and pick up the receiver. Use different looks and patterns to adjust timing.
Man to Man Drill – Maintain 2-3 yard spacing on Running Backs or TE’s with various Quick Routes. Practice cut under or pursuit to the ball when thrown, maintain eye contact on the QB.
Interception Drill – LB’s follow coach or QB using a drop pattern, LB’s follow and converge on the pass. Use best ball catching skills. After ball are elevated all players yell “Pass” after ball is caught, all players yell “Oskie” and shuttle the ball all the way back in.

Sled Drill Materials Sled, 3 Shields, 4 cones
Hand Drills w/ Shields & Sled – (from all 4’s) Hands to pectorals, Thumbs up, Roll hips, Eyes up
LB Lockouts Drill - Blocker leans, LB Strikes, Locks, Pulls, Pushes, step and slide, Step & Strike w/shields
Low and Drive – With hand shiver and forearm, drive shield or sled
Pop the Sled – On whistle, LB pops the sled and runs outside and around the cone.

LB Drills Continued
All Shields and Bags available
Shuffle and Read – Set a pyramidal pattern with equipment. Let ball carrier commit direction and angle while ball carrier mirrors and bounces each gap. Finish with LB placing a wrap up on the ball carrier.
Move and Hit – Same as above drill with equipment brought into a straight line. Use RB and LB at 7 yards space.
Tempo Pursuit – LB pursues ball carrier down a specified line, begins with a shuffle pursuit to a possible run or carioca, back to shuffle and forward.
Blitz Technique – 4 Players/LB’s aligned, 3 yards off the line of scrimmage, on cadence even to the gaps, GO on BALL MOVEMENT (Teach good body posture, weight forward and moving sideways in the gap to reduce body surface) Finish tagging the Bag behind the line.
Scrape Technique – 4 Players/LB’s aligned, 3 yards off the line, come to scrimmage and then back to base, return to position, blitz on a hard angle off the Offensive Linemen’s tail as possible. GO on BALL MOVEMENT. Place plant foot, with outside foot going in and inside foot going out.
Jam Tight – Position LB just to the inside of the TE, do not allow an inside route. Jam and mirror the TE, do not engage or get caught.
Maintain inside leverage pushing him to the outside do not abandon your assigned zone, until receiver is flat. Eyes to QB’s movement.
