8th Grade Physical Education Evaluation Guideline
All 8th grade students are evaluated using a standard based grading system. The basic areas include:
Benchmarks = counts 25 % of a student’s grade.
Tests/Quizzes = counts 30% of a student’s grade.
Other Assessments = counts 15 % of a student’s grade.
Unit/Activity Performance =counts 30% of a student’s grade
The Unit/Activity Performance area will include assessments on the student’s final performance in each activity based on best effort, following rules, sportsmanship, and responsibility.
Daily Performance/Preparation will be displayed in Skyward but will not count as a percentage of the grade.
Performance is necessary in Physical Education for learning to occur. The student’s performance is recorded daily and based on the quality of his/her daily work during class as he or she engages in various activities designed to achieve specific benchmark standards. Every time a student misses a class period he/she must make up that class by completing a 30 minute workout at home using the Make-up Worksheet provided by the teacher. Please see the sample Make-up Worksheet on the reverse side of this paper. The only excused absence from performance is with a doctor’s note. Students with doctor’s notes will be given alternate written work. Parental notes are necessary if an activity needs to be modified for the student due to an injury that does not require a doctor’s attention. Please note that the student will be asked to dress to participate and be given an alternative activity appropriate for the particular situation and injury.
Preparation includes all activities done to prepare for the day’s lesson. This would include the pre-class walk, the stretching portion of the warm-up, the strengthening activities, and the cardiovascular endurance activities. Students are evaluated on the quality of their work and the extent to which they are challenging themselves.
Students are expected to be in class on time from the hallway and then they have 5 additional minutes to dress into their gym clothes for class. Clothes worn to school are not acceptable gym clothes. Gym clothes will be sent home on Fridays to be washed and returned on Mondays. The following guideline will be used to determine an appropriate gym suit. (Please note: If a problem arises such as not getting the gym suit washed, students may bring in a temporary gym suit)
Shorts/Sweat pants = any short or sweat pants that are in good repair and hemmed. The
shorts or pants must cover the belly button and be a reasonable,
modest length. (At least a 6 inch inseam is recommended) The length must satisfy our school dress code policy. Students will not be allowed to wear their shorts low at their waist so that their underwear shows.
T – shirt = Long or short sleeved, the shirt must be able to be tucked in.
No tank tops or sleeveless shirts. Shirts must be long enough that when the
student reaches in a stretch, his/her stomach does not show.
Shoes = In good repair, laces and tied. No cleats or soles that will mark the
gym floor. Please be aware that in the morning there is often dew on
the ground and the student may want to bring in an old pair of
“outside” shoes.
Socks = Required
Sweat shirts = Optional for outside use only.
