Buoyancy and Boat Technology

Week 4

Building a boat

Navigation

Walt: read and write word endings

Walt: understand the difference between physical and functional attributes

Walt: understand how technology changes and continues to change over time.

Focus:

Ngā mihi o Matariki! Happy Matariki! Following on from our Matariki/ Māori New Year celebration last Friday, we are going to be exploring the stars and the important role they played in navigation for Pasifika and Māori voyagers.

Navigation is our final mini focus for this term! We are going to be exploring a range of technologies used for navigation, and creating our own DLOs to share our learning.

Testing for buoyancy

Walt: understand how boats and ships float

Walt:

Focus:

We are now into our second mini focus for the term. We are now inquiring into transport and travel. In particular, we are finding out about technology used by Māori to travel around Aotearoa and beyond. During this inquiry, we will look at the resources used to create these methods of transport, and also changes to navigation over time.

Follow up Task

1. Get into pairs, and then find another team member from Maungarei.

2. Read the text together.

1. Fill a bucket up with water.

2. Choose a number of waterproof objects from around the classroom.

3. Do they float?

Buoyancy and Boat Technology

Walt: recognise when we have made a mistake, stop, and correct our mistakes.

Walt: make links between unknown words and rhyming words.

Walt: find answers to questions in the text.

Week 4

Walt: make links between texts

Walt: understand contractions

Focus:

This week we are beginning our second mini focus for the term. We have just finished three weeks inquiring into resources which were used by Māori before European settlers arrived, and before transport between different countries became easier.

We are now going to begin inquiring into transport and travel. In particular, we are going to find out about technology used by Māori to travel around Aotearoa and beyond. During this inquiry, we will look at the resources used to create these methods of transport, and also changes to navigation over time.

Video focus questions:

1. What is technology?

2. What technology is being used in this video?

The purpose of technology

Walt: find and use ideas

Walt: recognise examples of technology and their characteristics

Instructions:

This week, we are going to explore different technologies, and we are going to continue to read and talk about traditional Māori and Pasifika technologies.

We are going to continue to explore resources, tools, and techniques which were used in order to provide food and shelter. We will then look at what resources, tools, and techniques we use today and how these compare.

Video focus questions:

1. What is technology?

2. What technology is being used in this video?
