This term we have been talking about how technology has changed over time from when Maori first arrived in New Zealand, to when Pakeha arrived and what it looks like now! This week we will be looking at boats and how they have changed over time! This will help us understand what the technological process is and what needs to happen to make it change. We will also look at how the technology of the life jacket has changed over time and see the different things that they were made out of!

We have been looking at Maori gardening, cooking and the tools over the last few weeks. This week we will be looking at Maori fishing and what was involved with catching. We will have a discussion as a class around what we think Maori fishing is and what kinds of things they would have used. Instructions:

Hunting and gathering food is an essential part of life not only today but back when Maori first arrived in New Zealand. This week we will discuss the different ways in which Maori grew and collected their food and what materials they would have used in the early days. We will then see if there is a link between what we use today and the technology they used earlier on in New Zealand. We will see if there are links to what they used and also if these are still used today.

Firstly we will watch the video as a class and discuss all the ways in which Maori caught and gathered food and will look at what we still use today, Read Gardening in pre European NZ with your teacher and complete the follow up activity.

Maori Technology - Buildings

Instructions:

This week we will be looking at Maori buildings and how the ideas and structures of these buildings are still used today. We watch the video as a class first and talk about some of the ideas around this Maori building. You will then need to complete each of the three readings and their follow up activities. You will need to read Building a Wharenui with Miss Parrant before you can do the follow up task! Each of your follow up tasks will need to be placed on your blog and then onto the blog log for this term. This will need to be completed by next Monday at the latest.

Welcome to term 2!

This term we will be looking at Maori technology and how this technology has been changed and adapted over the years. We will see if some of the technologies that Maori were using when they first came to New Zealand can sill be seen today. We will also see how the technology has changed over time and has been adapted into some of the items we still use today. This week we will start by looking at Maori tools as these were an essential part of creating change and building and surviving, This week you will have three readings and three activities that you will need to complete.
